I am having a problem with my truck stalling when I take off from a dead stop then quickly let up off the throttle,it just dies. forward or reverse it does not matter whether the truck is cold or I have been running all day. I can do it every time. One dea ler says it is an adjustement to fix and another says flash the computer. I just changed the fuel filter just in case. It has been doing this since I got it 16k miles ago. has any body had this happen or know what I should do,. I have learned to just not let off the throttle so fast but what if you were backing a heavy load up a steep hill and it stalled... . oh boy ,he truck has 48k now

stall

My 97 use to do that also. It was idleing to slow. Increased the idle and it quite doing it. You should be about 750 rpm in drive and a/c on .

idle speed?

Check your idle speed. It will do that if your idle is too low. It's pretty simple to adjust. The idle stop is a verticle screw on the back of the injection pump. It has a lock nut. You need a 10mm wrench. Just loosen the lock nut and turn the screw until it's like you want. It's easier it you jam a screw driver in the front of the linkage to hold the throttle open so there is no pressure on the stop screw.

Quit going to the dealer who said the computer needed reflashing!

Your 97 doesn't have an ECM (engine computer) that controls the injector pump by processing data from sesnsors.

You do have PCM (vehicle computer) which monitors engine functions among other things.

Agree with others adjust low idle speed.

If that doesn't work we will have to go back to drawing board.

My 96 did the same thing. Use to drive me nuts, my wife use to quick kick the throttle, and stall it all the time. Only did it cold. A quick turn of the idle screw fixed it.

stalling

Mine also stalls (when cold in reverse). Rpm with engine warm is around 650 in DRIVE. The problem is with the TC and VB I have to drop it in neutral now at the lights. Raising the idle should only aggrevate this situation??

My 97 stalls also, the same way hot or cold. It seems to stall easier when the fuel tank is low like 1/4 tank or less maybe my imagination... don't know.

If the kicking up the idle doesn't work, you may have a low fuel pressure problem, which ismore than likely caused by a bad overflow valve.

I usally set the idle (on a warm engine) at about 850-900. They start right up in the cold, with no stalling problems. Also, if you have the stalling problem more in the winter, try changing the weight of the oil you are using. The thicker oils can bog things down in the cold.

:D

RJ2 I agree with Evan you're idle is to low you need to increase to 850-900 warm. My 96 did the same thing until I increased idle. Every time I towed and let off fuel quickly (below 10mph) the engine would stall which made it real hard to back the camper into place. I am confused though-on my 96 to adjust idle there was a threaded rod connecting to a lever on the injector pump. I had to loosen up two nuts on rod and turn rod (shortening) to increase idle-then tighten nuts back up. :)

Bill,

That's not the correct adjustment for the idle. That adjustment has to do with full throttle. The rod you adjusted goes from the lever near the TPS back to a lever on the pump. The rear lever is attached to the pump lever with two screws. These screws have a 8mm head and sometimes loosen. The pump lever rests against a stop screw at idle. This screw is on the back on the pump and is vertical. It takes a 10mm wrench to adjust it. First loosen the lock nut. Adjust the idle until it's correct and tighten the lock nut. The adjusment screw is hard to reach, especially on a 4X4.

Joe and Evan I appreciate your replies. I'll check it out tomorrow am but by adjusting this rod my idle went up 200 rpm and its been working for about 3 weeks and the stalling problem stopped. Bill

Bill,

The rod length adjustment is critical to make sure that your TPS is correct. It also affects full throttle. Look in your service manual to get the correct adjustment for the rod and how to measure it.

well fellas' with a little advice from you guys all is well, bumped the idle up a little (just a little over the line nearest 1000 rpm) and it doesn't die on me. Man to think I could have spent 70 bucks at one place trying to flash a computer that wasn't there or pay another dealership 150 bucks to adjust it..... I love you guys, you da best!!!!!!!God I love My Cummins

stalling

Bumped it up to about 850 rpm, relates to about 750 in drive. Works great , thought the TC would try to pull harder, but about the same. Find myself throwing it in neutral on long lights.
