I posted this question on a previous thread, with no results.

The thermostat called for, for my 98 12V, has a feature that blocks a by-pass port when the stat warms up, and opens.

My question is, what purpose does this by-pass serve, (opened or closed), and what would be the problem installing a stat without this feature?

Cummins doesn't offer a stat for anything above 175 degrees,so I have purchased a 195 degree stat from Napa (orig. for a 440" Dodge), that I would like to install. It looks the same as the Cummins stat, except with no block off tab.

IMO my existing 175 does not let engine get hot enough to work efficiently.

One of the previous posts said the Dodge stat would not work properly.

If possible, I would like a little more detail on that info.

TIA, Ray

the dodge stat works fine. From what I can tell by looking at my spare head is the block off on the cummins t-stat limits flow from the oil cooler area to maximize heat transfer time.

DPashko,

Thanks for that info. Now I know what it does.

I still have not inst. the Dodge stat. It's been so cold here I've started a small interior remodel on my house.
