I am looking @ buying a 1996 12V 2500. The guy who has the truck said it needs a transmission. What kind of $$ for this fix and is there anything I need to look at on the 12V before I buy. I have a 24V but am unfamiliar with the 12V.

Thanks for the help

Chris

Id say you could get a rebuild done for $3-3. 5k, depending on how its done and the upgrades done to it. In my opinion, theres no point in putting in a stock convertor, it should be upgraded at the very minimum. A good valve body would be money well spent too. You could go crazy and spend $7k+...

Depends what type of transmission, auto or standard, gonna dish out more for a auto, and if its an auto i'd definitly spend the xtra for a better converter.

The transmission is automatic. The guy who is selling the truck said the fuel is turned up on the truck. So I'm sure the downfall of the transmission is due to being run hard. The truck has 120,000 miles on it.

I would definitely spend the money and get an upgraded Torque Converter and a Valve Body to alter the shift pattern. I would also think about a shift kit to up the line pressure if you are planning on doing any towing. You are going to rebuild the transmission anyway you might as well do it right. I have a 96 and have done everything here except the valve body and am real happy with the transmission thus far.

my 95 needs some transmission upgrades before i put anymore power to it, i plan on going with the DTT's valve body, torque converter, and their shift kit, i have a mysterious shifting problem when cruising on the highway it'll shift out of OD, annoying as hell but the shift kit is supposed to solve the problem, the lock up switch apparently sends to much pressure to the governor, causing to downshift. You'll wanna watch out for these problems.

If you like the price and can afford the transmission upgrade, go for it. That is low mileage for a '96 and the engine should be solid.

I looked at the truck today. It started and idled fine. Owner put the truck in gear and it moved forward and backward. He said when the truck got warm transmission stopped completely in forward gears but not in reverse. Body is OK needs a exhaust, tires and a good cleaning. Guy wants $3600 what does everyone think?

CBeard, that is a good year for the Cummins. Does the truck have egt and boost guages? I have seen 2 Dodge/Cummins without guages and tried to explain to the owner about what happens to aluminum pistons when they exceed 1400F. This is more serious when towing.

After the engine reaches operating temp. check for bubbles in the coolant recovery tank. Check for excessive blowby as well. With out the truck being driveable it is hard to see how much black smoke (raw fuel, heat) is belching.

If you have more time than money offer him a lower price.

I got a truck for you, 96CTD, 12V,5speed,4WD long box ext cad,grey in&out,ready to haul(5th & air bag)certified 325K,but from Canada
