What, if any, are the differences between the 1st gen 12valves and the 2nd gen 12valves, as in differences between the blocks, cranks, rods, pistons, and heads?

Differences: Injection pump, injectors, turbo (on the 96+ trucks), heads are slightly different, all models have an intercooler, and some other smaller things.

I know that the injectors, injection pumps, and turbos are different. Im trying to find out the difference, if any, between the blocks, cranks, and rods.

Could be wrong, but with exception to maybe the piston bowl shape for the different injectors, the bottom end and block are probably the same.

In '98 the 12 valve uses the same block as the 24 valve but of course does not have 24 valve pistons. May be other things I don't know but externally it's different from '97 and down.

the head is really only the difference. if you want to get the most power out of the engine replace the head and all the other stuff that you need form the 2nd gen engine then your talkin 700 hp real easy

12valve parts on 24 valve block

Ok, so I was wandering if I can put a 12valve head and injection pump on my 24valve engine to replace that !*&^* VP44 pump? I have a 98. 5 and would love to get rid of the vp44 and the headaches that go with it. My pump quit and instead of throwing good money after bad. I would be willing to do a bit extra to be rid of the vp44 problems. So, what do you guys think, is it a go?

The 1st gen have 2 different type heads too... Intercooled and non-intercooled. The non-intercooled have a larger injector tip diameter and I thought that I read somewhere it made them a little bit more susceptible to cracking.

Unless you are after insane power or have deep pockets, stick with the VP44 or swap in a 12v engine. Would be easier and cheaper.

24v/12v parts?

Ok bmoeller, are you saying that the 12v head will not fit on the 24v block without mods to one or both of them? As for cost I have found a junk yard that has some piece parts, so I think I can get a head and pump a lot cheaper then I can get a vp44 pump, and that would get rid of that electronic junk.

It is not possible to swap heads w/o changing pistons, the bowl will not line up with the spray pattern of the different injectors. THe proper way is to change the gear cover on the front of the motor and bolt the p pump on. you will need a new set of fuel line and a few other misc parts, but the job can be done in a weekend if you have all the parts. We are getting ready to switch 2 different 24v motors over to a p pump.
