Thanks, TDR Staff

Competition Diesel Dragster anyone?

Competition marine version or not?

CUMINNTSTRKN,

Thanks, I will give ARB a call and I hope that it is that strong. My info has been from folks that sell several brands of lockers. Where do you get the stronger 37 spline axles? Ford went back to 35's, I think. Moser only makes 35 spline 80's and Superior doesn't do Dana 80's? I vaguely recall that ARB makes the 3. 54 airlocker in 35 spline and the 4. 10 locker in 37 spline... ... ... ?

Thomas,

I haven't gotten an answer... ... yet, I'll try again.

Sled Puller,

I mangled the spiders too, no fun. Can hardly believe that the crosspins breaks as it is huge . Appreciate the info and I agree that there is not a lot of pressure on the front. I can tell the difference in pulling with the ARB locked or unlocked. It's great when you have a front wheel on ice on in the air but absolutely useless for driving. Larry

LARRY

i'm not sure were you would get them, i typed in: dana 80 37 spline axles. in google and found some stuff. i think moser will custom make a set, and currie is another option. i wouldn't think it would matter if you had the 3. 54 carrier vs the 4. 10 one. the axles still go in the same?

arb told me they did have some dana 60's break, but it was the guys that were all twisted up in the rocks with one tire in the air and bouncing like crazy. he said with us driving in a straight line the axles will fail first.

my ARB has been in the front for 2 years now and has performed great--only prob I've had is the plastic tubing got a hole in it from rubbing on something--you can get a st. stl. tubing replacement that will alleviate the rubbing problem---when I had the detroit in my D70 I had no problems with it at all--sometimes it'd give me some tire squeal around corners and other times not--my plan is to put one in the D80 in the future---chris

CUMINNTSTRKN , I talked to Transfer Case Express in California. They said that they've had alot of 271's come in broken, and that the chain is actually smaller on them. I told him what i was doing and he recommended their rebuilt 241HD. The price was only 750bucks shipped to my door, with no core. That seems like an excellent price. What'll yall think????? Gene, What do you have in the front now? Have you considered a spool? Moser also makes front inner and outer axles... . to replace those D-44, whoops i mean D-60 wanna be's... I'd buy a Pro-Fab in a heartbeat if they had high and low range, for street use.

hufnpuf--that's a great price--I paid $1000 for my hd241 from them and I went and picked it up---interesting about the 271--when I did the swap the HD is one inch longer so you need to stretch out the front driveshaft--so far this hasn't been a prob--maybe if 4 wheelin and maybe not- and the rear driveshaft is compressed again so far no probs--but if you have a long bed you may have fool with the carrier bearing mount some--I di, but it could be because I have an auto and used a driveshaft out of a manual----make sure the input and output shafts will mate up with your existing pcs-----chris

My front is open, with 135,000 miles on it. How much longer will it last?? ;)

If it is Pro Fab time, I believe it is fiberglass body and tube chassis time!!

It is hard to use Fuller as a guage, with those itty bitty tires and lack of horsepower. ;) :D

CSutton, yes the driveshaft issue will be my last head scratcher. My truck is an ext. cab longbed. I'm making new shafts but i'm going to use the o. e yokes. My truck was 2wd, so i'm making everything as i go. I wanted to eliminate the carrier bearing, I have heard by only one person that five foot is as long as you want to go on a one peice shaft? Has anybody else heard the same?

seems like I've heard something to the length on our style trucks is to long for a one piece shaft--I don't remember if there was a measurement attached to it---chris

From what I have learned sixty inches is the maximum length that a drive shaft shop will build a tube. I know tube diameter and wall thickness makes a difference but I have never heard of a shop allowing a longer shaft out the door. I read a Spicer Driveshaft Manual that backed up the sixty inch rule , so there must be some logic to warping a tube that is longer.

hufnpuf - Did you you learn any other differences in strength between the 241HD's and the 271's ???

Thomas

Thomas, the only weak point that was stated during the conversation was that the chains were weaker on the 271's. I don't even know if they can be upgraded. It would be best to call and ask them, they seemed very knowledgable. There site is www.transfercases.com

anyone know the part# for a 1410 yoke that fits a 14 bolt?, six states guy said 1350 series was the largest made, or what model truck it came in? thanks Bob

Bob, if you wait till tomorrow i can get you the number off mine. I know i ordered it for a 1998, 3500HD cab and chassis, extended wheelbase, 454.

Wonder if the big rigs use a carrier bearing? or a two peice driveshaft. I know a guy that pulls in the atpa circuit, i'll ask him. But think of the strain those driveshfts have on them, to lift the front tires in the air... .

Scot,

I don't recall the exact length but mine is under 5ft. All the shortbox 4x4 quadcabs have one piece rear shafts and if you convert to a NV5600 the shaft gets shortened another 6 ins. There are problems long one piece driveshafts and problems with two piece shafts if they are too short!

Are you building the Ford/Cummins for sled pulling? Larry

Actually I am building it as a daily driver. Like a firearm though, it should be properly "proofed. " My biggest question is will the Ford frame hold the torque? I boxed it back 18" or so to help.

Scot,

I think your '78 F250 frame will be fine with the Cummins repower. I overloaded and abused a '79 F350 tow truck for years and had no frame or spring trouble. Couldn't say the same for the Chevy and Dodge tow trucks of that vintage though. If the Fords were loaded heavy the radius arm bushings wouldn't hold up. Urethene bushings fixed that. Good luck, Larry

Bob - I believe the Spicer part # for the yoke is

3-4-8001-1X ( Spicer )

That # is not in my Spicer drive line books , but it is right off of the Spicer box that the yoke came in. Tell your drive shaft guy to look for a yoke with a inside spline of 1. 401 dia. involuted 32 spline w/ a 2. 125 O. D. for the seal deminsion.

Hufnpuf is right about the application , the 3500 Cab Chassis had the 14 bolt w/ 1410 stuff. The real Cab Chassis 3500HD 's came with a Dana 80 rear axle.

Hope this helps Ya' , Thomas

thanks guys, I was just about to swap in a D70 just for the bigger u-joints. Hufnpuf did you get it from a GM dealer or driveline shop?, Bob
