Thinking about taking my truck to the dealer for a 15,000 mile service. How much should this cost? Is it really worth it?

It's an '04 3500, 4x4. I have very little time to do this myself right now and I am leaving for Tenn. this weekend. I want this truck to last a long time and just wondered what everyone's opinions were on have a this service completed.

I have also wondered what I might expect to pay. It was $80 for the first oil change (which was free for me). I was shocked. Plus the service was horrible.

Thanks,

Dave

15K Service

My dealer wanted to charge me $160. 00. It was going to amount to an oil change, rotate the tires and check stuff. I just had him do the scheduled oil change which I already have paid for up to 100K and I have a free rotation at a local tire shop.

Update on 15,000 mile service

My Dealer just called me back and gave me a price quote on the following:

Oil change, fuel filter change, & differential oil change.

Who wants to take a guess? ... ... ... ... .

They want $333. 64 plus tax!!!!!! #@$%! #@$%!

I guess I'll be taking care of it myself. I think they are totally nuts.

15K service

They charged me close to $70. 00 for a fuel fiter and labor. I ordered 3 from a supplier on line and it didn't cost me that much. I sure am glad I can do most of the maintenance myself.

Cost for my 15,000 mile service:

6 qts GL5 75-90 gear oil (bought in my small town. Could find cheaper, I imagine) $65. 34, Oil filter (Geno's single price) $8. 75, Fuel filter (Geno's single price) $ 12. 95, 3 gallons Delo 400 (Walmart) $35. 86. Total cost $122. 90 (fluid's add up). So I made $210. 74 for my labor! Plus, I know the job was done right. Oh, favorite purchase, the yellow drain pan with spout from Walmart for $ 4. 77. It really works great.

Wow! BSkinner is that Delo 400 that expensive in that small town. $35. 86/3gal= $11. 95 gal w/tax included. It's $6. 42 gal here at Walmart all the time 3gal/$20. 85 tax included.

In my opinon i would not trust any dealer to do any service on my truck unless it was covered by the warranty and well usually services are not. They usually do as little as they can for the most money they can charge, i know that most people related to the tdr do most of their services themselves. For that price you could switch your whole truck over to snythetic, engine, t-case, transmission, and diffs. I would just try and find the time to do it for that price.

Delo at Costco is about $35 for a case of 6 gallons. My local dealer charges $40 for a lube oil (Delo) & filter. I feel that is a great deal and I don't have to get my hands dirty or make a mess on the driveway and make the wife mad.

Go to your local Cummins shop and get friendly with the parts person, I pay $6 a piece for my fuel filters #19579 and oil filters #16035!! Oo. :p

Yes-sir-ree-bob... ... Costco for oil, a dozen filters and 3 fuel filters from ebay, rear end fluid from the local rip-off auto parts store ( wasnt worth the 90 mile drive to save 2 bucks a quart) I've yet to return to the dealer after I bought the truck. Same with the Harley... . why pay for the sub-standard service when you can do it right yourself.

And just think of all the beer you can buy with the extra dough.

OIl change, filter, check transmission, diff, top off all fluids - $39. 20

To change diff fluid I used a suction gun to pull old fluid out and re-installed Mobil1 syn. At 50,000 I will pull cover and do a complete clean out on diff and change transmission fluid.

I won't even consider going to a dealer except for warranty work or the purchase of a new vehicle.

Uh oh, brain fade. I looked at the wrong receipt and posted without thinking. The $35. 86 was for a case of Delo 400gallons at Sam's club. At Walmart, I bought oil for $6. 17/gallon. Sorry.

Dealer sent me a coupon for a free oil change on my 98. Made the appointment and when I showed up boy was he suprised! Coupon didn't specify gas engine only or anything.

They honored the coupon and did the oil change for free but they got even with me. They tightened the oil plug to about 10,000 lb ft of torque. I stripped the plug getting it off and must have bent the oil pan a little. Always leaked a little oil after that.

Oil change: Free

New plug: $20

Learning to NEVER let dealer touch my truck again?

PRICELESS

I paid roughly 350. 00 at my dealer for the 15k service in the book:

Included an Oil Change, Fuel Filter, Transmission Filter and Oil Change, Tire rotation, and the dealer washes it with an oil change. But, my truck doesn't need any service until 22500 for an oil change.

15,000 mile service

Needless to say I'll be doing this myself. I'll just have to make the time for it.

Thanks for the replys. Sounds like my dealer isn't the only one charging this much. My first experience (a free oil change) was a horrific one, so I can just imagine what this one would have been like. I'm from out in the sticks, but I think my dealer thinks their in deliverance country.

Thanks again,

Dave

I was charged $134 for fluids and $111 labor for changing the diffs on the 4X4. Something about a special $20/qt. diff fluid...

I take mine to a quality family owned quick lube, and he charges me $54. 65 to change oil and filter, checks everything, tops off all fluids and has free cookies!!!!
