Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 15 min Lift Pump Replacement

Thanks to all for the different tips to change out the lift pump.

The best tip was to remove the bolts holding the fuel filter casing in place and moving it away from the block.

I'm sure with practice I could now remove and replace the lift pump in 10 minutes.

The new one works great : 15 psi @ idle; 12 psi @ 65 mph and 10 psi @ WOT with the PE Comp on 5.

Glad my tip helped you. After a few tries you should be able to do it in less than 10 mins. with no problems.

I bought the lift pump at Cummins West on Reed Ave off of I 80

in West Sacramento near the Highway Patrol Acadamy.

I belong to the Cummins Power Club which you can join on the spot for $25 or so and you get every thing less 10%. My price after tax was $142. It is a new improved pump with a new harness adapter that comes with it.

I must be missing the first part of this thread. Do I understand correctly that there is a new, updated lift pump available from Cummins for the HO? Part number? Where can I find the directions for quick removal that are referred to?

The lift pump from Cummins West in West Sacto was for a Y2k ETC. I don't know if it will fit the HO.

As far as replacing the lift pump, these are the steps to remove it from the top:

1. Disconnect neg battery terminals.

2. Remove the (2) 10mm bolts from top of fuel filter cannister at head. Pull it away from block towards fender (Suggestion: Tie a wire from the left bolt hole in the filter cannister to the air horn to keep the rubber fuel line from bending so that it can easily be removed from the lift pump outlet banjo. Do not remove the outlet banjo at this time.

3. Remove the quick-disconnect fuel line at the lift pump inlet from the fuel tank. Do not remove the inlet banjo at this time.

4. Disconnect the wire harness from the lift pump.

5. Remove the 10mm bolt from the top of the lift pump that secures the lift pump fuel inlet tube and banjo.

6. Remove the (3) 13mm nuts from the top of lift pump and remove the pump.

7. Remove the 17mm banjos, replace washers(they don't come with new pump)and install banjos in new pump at same angles.

8. Re-install new lift pump in reverse order with the new wiring adapter harness.
