Do you remember the day when you saw on the news that the Berlin wall came down? I remember pointing out to my nieces as we watched the people celebrating while standing on top of the wall, that they were witnessing history happening right before their eyes. I remember thinking to myself, "They're too young to understand what this is all about. " Like many of you who went to grade school in the 50's and 60's, I remember the "duck and cover" instructions and the scratchy films about what to do in case of a nuclear attack. Remember when there were small signs on buildings that said, "Fallout Shelter"? Remember the monthly air raid siren tests? In SoCal it was at 10 am on the last Friday of the month, if memory serves me right.

As I watched a bit of anniversary footage on the news just now, I thought of a song called "Heresy" by the Canadian band Rush. The lyrics are pretty profound:

All around that dull grey world

From Moscow to Berlin

People storm the barricades

Walls go tumbling in

The counter-revolution

People smiling through their tears

Who can give them back their lives

And all those wasted years?

All those precious wasted years

Who will pay?

All around that dull grey world

Of ideology

People storm the marketplace

And buy up fantasy

The counter-revolution

At the counter of a store

People buy the things they want

And borrow for a little more

All those wasted years

All those precious wasted years

Who will pay?

Do we have to be forgiving at last?

What else can we do?

Do we have to say goodbye to the past?

Yes I guess we do

All around this great big world

All the crap we had to take

Bombs and basement fallout shelters

All our lives at stake

The bloody revolution

All the warheads in its wake

All the fear and suffering

All a big mistake

All those wasted years

All those precious wasted years

Who will pay?

What was the name of that girl who sang for Rush?

Aimee Mann sang some of the vocals for "Time Stand Still" on "Hold Your Fire". That's the only girl I've heard of to sing with Rush.

LOL... When I was stationed at APG, Md in the early 70s I rented a place off base in Belcamp... . the owner had built his own bomb shelter on the property.
