Aux. Fuel Tank Question.

Who makes big fuel tanks for Rams?

Another way to set up transfer!

Use a tank switching valve on the suction line only. The return line remains connected to your main tank filling it up as you drive. No pump needed. :D

I had a lengthly post but lost it. Midspan refers to the position on the truck not the spot on the rail (top to bottom). The holes need to be drilled on the bottom of the rail. Or the "flange" in "I" beam speak. If AERO had a bracket that put the holes on the web (closer to the nuetral axis) as described in the dodge manual I would not have had much of an issue. Even transfer flow calls for holes to be drilled on the top of the frame rail for the spare tire tank. I skipped those because the frame I was attaching was sitting on top of the frame rail and was also bolted to a bed channel. I had to ignore one vendors advice and I chose to ignore the aftermarket rather than the OEM. I agree The AERO can be "Made to fit" so it is for my truck. NOT! My fault though the AERO tank was around 500$ and the transfer flow was around 900$ ( gross dim memories ) When you pick the low bidder you get exactly what you deserve...

Thanks for the information. I was thinking of not buying the install kit from Aero so was happy to see the post. At Aero the person at the counter (Lady) said the electric switches are not reliable(fuel eats them?) and I should only use the manual valve. I'm not crazy about tying into the sender circuit and wanted to keep it simple. Time to visit NAPA :D

I got an elec. switch-over valve rated for diesel,

maybe that is why it was $41. I guess I'll find out

how reliable it is.

Smokin Joe,

Getting back to the original topic, I might be very interested in one of those tanks. I'm planning on changing my exhaust to in front of the rear wheels again anyway. I'd like to know overall dimensions and see some pics when you get it designed.

interested . . yes, however need more info as to where / how it mounts... how far it hangs down . . whats involved in the mounting process v/s moving stock stuff around to make it fit. . ect. ect.

I have a TF bed mount 54 gal/tool box now + the stock 35 gal. and love it .

So maybe I have two that are interested?

I think you would have more than 2...

I have been following this thread with INTEREST. I currently have the Transfer Flow replacement tank, and that company IS EXCELLENT!!! Honestly, that is the first time I have had the pleasure of installing an aftermarket product that had that degree of quality, and everything fit as designed.

I want more fuel capacity, but I need a spare tire, and I like where it is. If it were well thought out, and fit properly (NOT like the Aero crap, and I had one of those P. O. S. also), I think quite a few people would be interested, not just 2!!!

Keep us posted. Some people are not very vocal, but they do watch. :D

Pictures this week???

Oo. Do your have any drawings of how this would mount or what it will look like. :)

I am leaving for New York at the end of the month. I will need to have the alpha version on by the end of the week. I may have pictures then. Drawings would be done later to increase the strength and make it easier to fabricate...

Don't know about his, but my 152 gallon system works great. I have the 54 gallon Transfer flow replacement tank, and their aluminum diamond plate cross-the-bed 98 gallon tank. The system has the TRAX so I don't ever have to watch levels in the two tanks. The trax shows level in each tank in gallons, and the dash fuel gauge now shows combined amount vs. possible. So, at 1/2 on the gauge, it means both tanks are half full.

Before Transfer Flow I tried a cheapie tank from a well known supplier of tool boxes, etc. It rusted, cracked, etc. Should have gotten Transfer Flow the first time! Check them out at www.transferflow.com and see TDR 32 p. 142; 35, p. 126; and TDR37, p. 148 for a few of the writeups on their tanks. Their stuff isn't the cheapest, but it is complete, fits correctly, and works flawlessly. You definitely get what you pay for.

Smokin' Joe,

If you're still pursuing this I'm interested but would need to know a lot more info before sending a check.

I'm seriously considering the Transferflow 54 gal replacement to increase my range when towing - ~10mpg w/36ft 5th wheel. Transferflow's 38 gal aft axle (spare tire location) tank offers more bang for the buck but I can't/won't put my spare in the bed & a bed mounted tank is not an option for me.

I've heard that the mid ship tank hangs down a fair amount lower than the stock tank. I would love to install one of these but wouldn't want to snag something on it. Anybody have thoughts on this? Also, how about the sending unit. Is the computer DTE still accurate with respect to the amount of fuel still in the tank?

Dennis

The Transfer Flow tank hangs a couple inches lower, but on my 97 it is level with the transfer case skid plate. I welded an extension to the skid plate that goes under the first 1-2" of the TF tank. The fuel gauge works fine; the TF tank is the same depth in that area as stock.

Dsather, The DTE on the trip computer would not be accurate because it is assuming that the tank has 35 gallons... not 54. :)

I chimed in before. But I think I changed my mind. The 1998. 5 with its hunting tc may become the spare vehicle. If smokin joe is building a 150 gallon under bed tank I would now be interested. That is after I order a new 03 or 04 3500 SRW. This means I can really "play" with the 1998. 5 and do mods without regard to cost benefit. ( like that was a real consideration before) I now have three diesels and am considerig buying a fourth. So yes I would be willing to pay in the neighborhood of 1,000$ which is right in line with transfer flow prices. Stainless would be cool- but it is one of the most PITA materials.

Yes - as long as I don't have to work with it! I built a guage panel out of it once- Never again! No welding. Just cutting holes for guages and drilling mounting holes. Carbon steel would have been done in 1/4 the time.
