Thanks, TDR Staff

WOW - Honda CBR1100 makes 500hp with just a turbo - no nitrous!!

"The new Plan"

Nephew just bought a new 1500 Regular cab Hemi 4x4. Invoice was around $29,000 - list was around $34,000 WOW :( Has anyone heard if these are good trucks? They are sure expensive  With the $2500 rebate I guess he paid around $26,500. But I bought a new 3500 that listed for $37K for $28. 5K just 6 months ago and it's a real truck with a CTD in it. ;)

1500 is the "truck" that Dodge sells that's designed to carry groceries, kids, and market share.

PB, as for the Hemi, your nephew has a good one. That engine went through some of the toughest testing of any modern engine- over 1. 5 million miles in brutal conditions. It also cost DC a LOT less to develop than the tame 4. 7 motor.

Here's the tech profile of the new Hemi: displacement-wise, it's a stroked 318. The connecting rod length is the same Mopar A engine length (6. 123"), though the rod journals are WAY thinner (2") and the rods are made of the new "powdered metal". The block is based loosely on the race blocks that mopar sells, so it's beefy. The cam is a LOT higher in the block, allowing shorter (more rigid) pushrods, but a longer timing chain.

The heads are the real beauty of the engine. Valves are opposed in a "V" configuration, with two rocker shafts per head. This allows straight ports with no valve shrouding. Also, the ports are evenly spaced (eliminating the different port lengths and the hot spot where the two exhaust ports are paired together in the middle). Compared to the 426 Hemi, the valves are slightly more vertical, allowing a more compact combustion chamber (and less emissions). This also helps performance. It also has dual-spark plugs for less emissions.

The ignition system uses a cylinder-deactivation to shut off spark and fuel to unnecessary cylinders when cruising to save fuel.

Overall, the engine is lighter than a 360, makes 100 MORE hp, has fewer emissions, and gets BETTER mileage than the 360 did.

345HP/365 Tq- in TRUCK tune. Wait until this baby gets into the RWD Mopars that are coming down the pike in the next 2 years.

BTW- a 6. 1L version is also planned. Why you would make a whole separate engine that is so close in displacement to the 5. 7L Hemi is beyond me.

They should make a 7. 2L version-- that just HAPPENS to come out to 426 cubic inches:D

Sorry so long, but you can't say i am not thorough

I'm not too hot on those powdered metal rods. flowerstrokes use 'em too.

other than that it sounds pretty neat.

Yeah, I don't know much about the powdered metal rods, but methinks they are cheaper and weaker than a quality 4340 Rod.

Maybe Carillo will make a retrofit?

Looks like they are saving money and weight

Connecting rods and rod caps are initially formed as one-piece powdered metal forgings. Molding them from powder before forging assures excellent dimensional and weight control with minimum machining. Powdered metal rods are lighter than conventional forgings, especially at the piston end, resulting in low reciprocating weight and smooth high rpm operation. Weight is lower because the rods are made without the excess material that is partially machined away as part of the normal balancing process on conventional rods. The cap is separated from the rod by a unique process. The uneven surface that results from the breaking process provides perfect rod to cap alignment at assembly. Rod cap retention screws thread directly into the connecting rod for simplicity and light weight

Generally, the Hemi will replace the 360 in all appications. Thus, 360 Durango become Hemi Durango.

Rumor had it that they were going to make an R/T version of the Durango with a supercharged Hemi in it-- an easy 450 HP. I think they killed it because it was too close to a Viper in HP.

For all the latest DC rumors and such, check out www.car-truck.com

That's the "insider" site for DC.

Personally, I would think you could get a 1500 Hemi SWB, put a supercharger in it, and VIOLA! You would have something that could eat the lunch of the Ram SRT/10, and do it for thousand$ less.

You wait-- this Hemi is too hot for the aftermarket to neglect. Once the Blower guys (paxton, vortech, ATI Procharger, etc. ) catch on, LOOK OUT!

EDIT: I forgot to mention-- there's no reason YOU couldn't throw a hemi into a 4. 7L Durango. The trans is the same, and it will bolt right up...

OO! How 'bout a blown hemi Dakota? make Hot Rod Magazine eat crow over its DogKota article...

I was just at the dealer looking at the truck my brother wants. I asked them if the hemi was going in the Dokota, he said NOT!

but they were putting it in the Intrepid. why?

That would be sweet. I could handle that as a grocery getter for the woman. At least when we took hers instead of the truck we would still be moving in style. In reality I would really actually love to have a full size with a cummins. Wish to god Dodge would put out something along the lines of Ford's excursion. Oh well, May have to save the pennies and have a conversion done, somewhere down the road.

Remember two things:

1) Dealer personnel are rarely the most informed

2) Dealer has incentive to sell you what he has, not what MIGHT be coming out... ...

The Hemi won't be everywhere the 360 was, but if it isn't going into a certain vehicle, then the 360 would have been phased out in that model anyway.

Leave it to the guys at Kenne Bell. I would imagine that 1500 Hemi w/ supercharger could turn a Lightning into a lightningbug.
