I've done some modest BOMBing to the ol' girl. At this point I get about 24 - 25 Psi at 2500 RPM and the EGT gets pretty toasty empty never mind loaded(no intercooler yet #ad
).
The fuel del. pin is at max, star wheel bottomed and the Aneroid set screw 1/4 turn in from all the way out, and the rest of the mods in the sig.

The main question is how much effect does the 16cm housing have vs. the 18. 5cm? Is it worth my $$ and time??? Some say that the difference is not worth the money for the small change from the stocker.
All comments welcome.

Hi Jason,
I noticed quite a difference when I upgraded to the 16cm2 housing (but I started with the BIG one!). If your EGTs are climbing too fast/high, maybe you should consider an intercooler first.

Lil' Dog, Yes you need the intercooler! Then you will be able to go to the 16cm2 housing for quick spool up and better performance. Is the muffler gone or Walker style installed. This would have a great deal to do with high EGTs. When isnstalling a 16 on a first gen. truck with enhanced fuel, you will notice a big difference!

The exhaust be straight, as in like no sound suppression other than the chrome turndown #ad
. The 3 1/2 is from where the muffler used to be and over the axle and out the side (part of a stinger kit for a Pherd). With the Pherd hangers I can put the tip on with a clamp, not slot it and weld it around the final hanger.
Anyway, I know its tuff to explain but, how far down in RPM does the boost come up? With the stocker its around 16-1700 before it breaks 10 Psi then ramps up with engine speed.

Hey there Lil'Doug,

FYI, I changed my housing from the 18. 5 to the 16cm and saw 'a bit of difference' in the boost response. I admit I need to fine tune the pump settings a bit but if I was going to do it again soon I'd pick up a 14cm housing. I found the change from 18. 5 to 16 a bit subtle for me. It does spool up quicker to be sure but does not seem to have given me more boost. (thought it should. )
For what its worth.

I got 5 lbs of boost, just from changing to the 16cm2, on my 92.

Jason, if you want a 18. 5 cm housing, used, have a friend in Phoenix with one, took it off a '93 W250 and fitted a 16 cm one. Email me if interested, will check if he still has it and get you his address.
A neighbour changed his '92 W250 from a 21 cm to a 16 cm housing yesterday, after on the dyno it was producing 25 lb of boost, up from 20 lb.

Reminder, in this year of truck the 18. 5cm2 is stock. So the small trip up to 16 isn't going to be as steep as from in the 91. 5 up 21cm2's. If the $200 Cdn is only gonna give me another # I can remove the collar on the fuel screw for nothing. If the boost comes sooner however it may be worth it instead of reving above 1750 to get 10#s.
Thoughts??

Jason

I've got two spare 18cm2 housings from both of my trucks. The 16cm2 housing did make a noticeable difference in the mid range RPM, even with my stock pump settings. If anyone is looking for an 18cm2 housing, let me know - I'll even throw in shipping for $50ea.

Lil' Dog: My experience is as follows... I went from a 18cm2 to a 14cm2(wastegated)and noticed "alot" quicker boost and earlier(almost instant at pedal down). Boost went from 15# max to 25#. I also put in PW injectors and upped the timing but I feel the turbo lets me use the additional power quicker and earlier. Check signature for other mods. Also,I didn't go to 12cm2 as I feared higher EGT's when towing. 14cm2 and other mods lowered my EGT's. FYI.

Thanks for the info Billy Kidd. I see that alot of the high output race guys have the 14 Cm wastegated. Thats part of the Banks kit right?? I'm not sure if I want to spend the extra 150-200 bones above the cost of the 16 cm for the wastegate.
I see you went to the Banks intercooler(Techni-cooler). Is there that much of a difference to the stock one? I'll take the old one! LOL.

Jeh

Lil’ Dog,

IF you have an intercooler the 14cm2 housing would be a good choice. NON intercooled,
“PW” injected, enhanced fuel would probably run hot EGTs under load with the 14. The 16cm2 housing is a good all around housing for less $$. Even with the 16, the
intercooler addition will work just fine with a little fuel tuning.

Lil' Dog: I replaced the intercooler with a Banks because I had a piece of metal thrown up on the freeway punch a large hole in my stock one. Price difference was about $200. 00(stock replacement from Dodge)and I liked the flow differences claimed by Banks. After install I noticed a slight increase in boost(Banks recommends a slight turning up of pump in their insall instructions)About 2#'s, and slight increase of power. (turned up pump?)EGT's didn't seem to change. Bottom line,I wasn't that impressed with differences from stock! Other mods(see signature)are what made the difference!!!

I hear ya... The pump tweak, exhaust, turbo, injectors all were the key to your wheel spin.
I was just hoping to find a discarded intercooler for my project wagon. LOL. Then maybe I will upgrade the turbo housing. At this point the pump mods, exhaust and injectors alone bumped me from 19 Psi to 24 Psi boost. I consider myself a junior BOMBer amoungst the group here.
