Hi, I am new to the forum and have q question regarding the best solution for enchanced performance on my '96, 5 speed, 3. 54 rear end Dodge/Cummins. Four years ago I purchased and installed a T. S. T. Torgue Plate and a 16MM Turbo Housing.

I have now received a recommendation from a local performance dealer that I replace the 16MM Turbo Housing with a 14MM Turbo Housing - they claim the smaller housing gives better performance in the mid-RPM range, which is where I do most of my driving. Incidentally, I pull a 32 foot 5th wheel, and the combined weight of truck and RV is about 20,000 lbs.

Anyone with any experience on the two different size Turbo Housings, or any general comments would be appreciated.

Thanks. JM Vincent

Just a slight correction, it's centimeters, not millimeters, and if the shop you are talking to about this is telling you it's mm stay away from them.

How about some info to help with the situation. Do you have an EGT problem when towing? How hot do they get? What TST plate did you install?

Here is the deal (IMO): A 5 speed with a plate is better with the 16, because the 215 pumps can get a little warm with a big plate in there and go to a smaller housing will increase your EGT's. From a driveablility standpoint, there is probably such a small amount of difference, if any, going from a 16 to a 14 on a BOMBed manual truck it isn't worth the cost of the new, very expensive, 14cm housing. If your truck was an automatic it might be a different story.

Stay with the 16 :)

Maybe the guy at the at the shop just wants to sell you a new housing??? ;)

It depends on what trips your trigger! I had a 14 and tried a 16 for 1k miles and sold it. I put the 14 back on and its staying on! I didn't think the slightly better top end power was worth sacrificing the better responce and less smoke with the 14. I have no egt problem to speak of. If I push it to 1250 on the big passes, I can easily pass every other truck and RV. The 16 might be OK at lower altitude but I didn't like it here. I'm very fussy about driveability! Craig

Ryan: Thanks for the reply and info. Unfortunately, I don't know the number of the TST plate, as it was furnished by Diesel Injection of Pittsburgh - its the one they recommended. I did have trouble with high exhaust gas temperatures because when we installed the torgue plate the vendor erroneously told me to install the torgue plate all the way forward, which gave too much fuel and hence high EGT. I just changed the setting of the torque plate which seems to have helped the high exhaust gas temperature, so now its not as big a concern. Hope this answers your request for additional info. Thanks, JM Vincent

You know what they say about opinions...

Here's mine:

I'd stay with the 16. The 14 will raise your EGT's approx. 100 degrees. IF you think you can tolerate 100 degree higher EGT's, which means that Powerjoke just might climb that next hill faster than you ;), go for the 14. The 14 will obvioulsy spool faster than the 16, but you may be dissapointed with, what I think, might be a performance gain of the 14.

If you are shooting for better spool-up, and a better all around driving expereince, (and you are to upset with parting with a few $$$ to spend on the truck) you might consider one of Piers modified turbos. They are a bit more than a 14cm housing, but the benifits I think will be much more noticable and enjoyable.

You might give Piers a call, he will give you a no BS answer. He probably will be hard to catch this week, I'm guessing he already left for TX.

JMHO,

Ryan

Ryan: Again thanks for the reply. Do you happen to have the information on how to contact Piers re his modified turbo?

Thanks, JM Vincent

Convoy to Abbotsford

Bob Wagner: Thanks for the info. on PiersDiesel Research. I'm interested in the convoy you mentioned. How about details on where convoy departs from, how long will people be staying in Abbotsford, and is there a good R. V. park or other place we could park our 5th wheel while checking out Piers Diesel Research? Best regards, JM Vincent

convoy to Abbotsford

We usually meet at Cummins NW/Renton early AM and head north to Arlington for breakfast.

Most Members just stay the day in Abbotsford except for the guys from Spokane and Montana.

There are a couple of nice RV parks in the area for those who wish to stay.

If you want to add your name to the email list email me.

Also check out www.nwbombers.com for more info on our local group.

Take Care,

Bob

We always have a great time north of the border ;)

No egt problem with my 14(and I'm at high altitude)and haven't seen a PSD I couldn't whoop on a hill yet! Can't wait to try my new manifold on em! Craig

Spring 1999 TDR

Pages 54 & 55 talk to the 14cm housing. One note in the article is that exhaust backpressure with the 14cm housing is reduced by 55% over the 12cm.
