.17 HMR or HM2

Been thinking about getting a . 17 HMR rifle. What is the difference between the HMR and HM2? My target would be paper, ground hogs and wild cats. Out to 100 yards will the . 17 have enough power? Also thought of a 22mag, but the . 17 seems to be a flatter shooter. I read someone talking about buying one for around $150. 00, the picture had a heavy barrel. Anybody know (brand) would be selling in that range?

One of my customers bought a . 17HMR in a cheap heavy barrel Marlin. It is kind of fun to shoot. He was waiting for a Barrell to come in for a . 223 I was making for him. It is basicly a 100 yrd gun on ground squirrels. I have been told they do not work well on coyotes even close. Shooting a coffee can full of water dead stops the tiny bullet. just makes copper and lead sediment in the bottom of the can. For getting rid of unwanteds around the house, it's fun.

my bull barrel savage 17 hmr was $140, the trigger was pretty crappy but i tuned it up good for no cash with a little polishing and a few shims in different places, it's the proverbial glass rod now, my uncle got a marlin 17 hmr for around the same $$$ that i did some trigger work on but my impression of it was not as good of a design as my savage, sorta clunky, if wanted any less power then the hmr then id just shoot a . 22lr, cheeper, the only merit i see to the hm2 is it can be retro'd into . 22lr's, i've had it a while but have not had the oportunity to kill many things with it but iseems to do a good job of it, unless you go for the head not good for squrrel meat harvisting, sorta turns em insideout

Don't know if it's too late, but my buddy has a . 17 HMR and it's a good little gun. The place he bought it at bore sighted it to 150yds. I know how to bore sight, but don't know enough to know how they did it to 150. Anyways, he took it to my ranch without actually taking it to a range and it shot on target all weekend. Mostly jackrabbits at about 30-50yds, but some in the 75-100 yd range. I was surprised by the energy it packed for as small of a cartrige as it is, I shoot a . 17 Remington with hollow points(4000+fps muzzle) and the damage was comparable. If your shooting ground hogs within 100yds I don't think there would be a problem.

Thanks for the replies. I been talking to my neighbor about lining up a couple ground hog trips. He knows most of the local farmers and gets more then his fair share of "removal requests".

i have personally seen a . 17hmr drop a whitetail at 70+ yds. Not that they have a lot of stopping power, but they are extremely accurate and a well place shot in the head will drop about anything. Another plus, they are very quiet, which is good if you are trying not to alert the game warden.
