I ran the 16 turbine housing with my former pump and a PDR hx-35. It had more boost then the gauge would read. I don't believe therre was any lag.
When I installed the current pump and turbo I also installed the 21 housing to see if that would help out with the EGT's. I don't know how much it has helped, as so many things have changed I have nothing to compare it too... ..... untill I reinstall the 16.
There seems to be no lag in the realm of daily driving. When I do a controlled burn-out, I can "sense" a momentary lag just moments prior to the engine coming to life.
My boost gauge still suffers from whip lash when I hammer the throttle... ... . so I guess it's ok??????? I'd have to reinstall the 16 to best answer your question.
IMHO as time progresses and this pump/turbo information becomes more wide-spread, you will see less and less of the 16 housing and folks will be looking for a 18. 5 or the 21 again. I'm told there is no difference between the modified 16 and a stock 18. 5 (???) The 16 seems ok (and popular) for a mild pump set-up. I don't believe it's nessesary nor wise to install one with a tricked out pump.
Stan, the guys with the automatic challenged trucks will still have to do something to prevent lag

You and I will simply build boost and never look back.
