nope, the rubber seal is it. I didn't loose enough coolan to add any when I changed mine.

don't over tighten the bolts. . they're small and easy to break.

I went to replace my thermostat, and I found that it already had a 180 in from the factory. According to Cummins Tech line, most are shipped with 180's unless their destination is cold climate.

On a side note, when I went to pour my coolant back in, there were thousands of tiny black beads in the bottom of the catch pail. What could this be? My coolant was just flushed 5K ago and replaced with Fleetguard coolant. I thought that maybe it was something left over in the flush machine.

update, just replaced it, took all of 5 minutes. It had a 190F installed (OEM) which appeared to be a Cummins T' stat. Gotta go drive it now :D

Hey Texas Diesel where did you get your 180* thermostat? I noticed since the temp has been over 90* mine has been running a little over 190* with the air on coming home on hwy71. Up till now it has always been a little under 190*.

I would think a 190 would make the engine operate more efficient. Why not leave the 190 in and just trick the ECM into thinking the engine is at 180 degrees via a plug in fooler between the temp sender and the vehicle wire harness. Best of both worlds if in fact the improved mileage is as you state. Just a thought.

The only thing the ECM really watches is wheather the engine is cold and if the IAT is cold. . otherwise it doesn't care.

Why bother to fool the engine when for $14 you can get the engine to run more efficiently anyway.

Cummins recommends the 180* and DC puts in a 190 to help emissions. I think I'll go with Cummins on the TS choice sine they design and build the engine.

FWIW,

Mark

I got it from Genos Garage and it was a Cummins part. Now it sits to the left of 190 and stays there instead of moving around.
