$19 a quart 6 sp lube?

Decided to drop by the local shop and pick up some lube for the 2001 6sp trans without doing the regular homework on the job. Yea, I have been real busy and didn't get on-line to confirm... . but that's another story.



What lube are we running these days? It's time, I have the will and the tools. I was sold some GM synthetic lube as the proper fluid. It is part #12346190 . Heard of it?

Hi I changed my 6spd fluid last year, I don,t remember exactly what I paid but it was pricey, I got the stuff at the Dodge dealer I do get a discount of sorts, anyway after hearing all the horror stories regarding the problems you can have by putting the wrong type of fluid in the monster, I just went with the o. e. m. fluid. lot of people say they have no problem with using a cheaper priced fluid thats great, I simply don,t want to chance it. The trans. is working great, I will leave well enough alone. Good Luck

I use Redline MTL, it was $7 or $8 a quart. I did not look with the new board but look in the FAQ's under 3rd gens and I believe your question is in there. At least it was under the old board.

Standard Transmission will sell you the right fluid for alot cheeper.

Back when I had my '95 half ton I brought it into a transmission shop to have the fluid changed. I'm assuming for this thread that it's the same stuff... if it's not, ignore this.



Anyway, apparently they used the wrong fluid as I found out later. Slowly I found that when I went into fifth gear I could hit the dash with the shifter. I didn't think too much of, just figured the transmission was wearing a little and I eventually got used to shifting it so it didn't hit.



I eventually went to another shop to have the fluid changed again (back then I drove a lot and didn't do any of my own work for the most part). They told me that I can't use anything other than OEM and that it cost about $20/qt and I'd have to go to the dealer and pick it up.



I went to the dealer, purchased what I was told to buy and went back to the transmission shop. They changed the fluid and I couldn't believe it. It felt like I had a brand new transmission. It wouldn't even get CLOSE to touching the dash.



From now on I do my own work for the most part... . but I always look in the service manual for fluid recommendation. In fact, about the only fluid I don't stick with the stock stuff is the Rotella oil I use.

Mopar MTF is made by Texaco (or was). Penzoil MFT has the same ASDM (?) rating, and meets the Mopar criteria down the line. This is the kind of thing that the Magnum Moss act was designed for. Using comperable OEM replacement items like oil, coolants, sparkplugs...



So long as the stuff you put in meets the manufacturers requirements, you will be OK. There is better stuff out there, but if a problem does happen...



You need to decide what side of the fence you want to stand on. I change my transmission and diferential fluids once a year with the off the shelf fluids that meet the requirements. $3. 00 and change for the MTF fluid versus the stea... dealers $19. 00.

Pennzoil Synchromesh is the direct replacement for the Texaco STF 1874 (Chrysler Part No. 4874464). This also meets Chrysler Specification MS9224. Last I checked, it was about $5. 00/qt.

This is your homework, just kind of after the fact, sort of.



Been there done that. Went and bought something that I thought was the right stuff, then checked on it after I got home to find out it was wrong.

that penzoil stuff seems to be easy to get in the usa. up here in canada, i can't find it. i can find the quakerstate equivalent [same company] that seems to be the exact same stuff, and the best i can do it for is just under $10cdn a liter when i buy it by the case of 12. i can go to my local dealer and buy the dealer stuff for under $11cdn and he has it in stock [and when i last asked for the price, i didn't try to get a discount on it, so i might be able to get another 10%-15% off]

GM syncromesh fluid

The right part # for the GM stuff is GM #12345349. I just helped a friend change the fluid on his 6spd and we used the GM stuff. They have it at NAPA but you have to be carefull has they have several GM transmission fluids in similar cans.

I've been using the Pennzoil stuff in my rig but think I'll change to the GM fluid... . it just looked better to me. Price was about $7. 50 a bottle.
