When I bought my 1st gen, the previous owners had roasted the motor, but included with it a short block from a 94, gear case, and P-pump from a 96 motor. This was two years ago, and not knowing a whole lot about the CTD at the time I put it together, per manual instructions, and had a shop time the motor. Now that I've learned alot more, I finally opened the pump up in order to check the plate because of high egt's. There was none. So I got that taken care of and borrowed some tools from a friend to check my timing and perhaps advance it while I was at it. Well I was told the pump was a 215 pump, at the time I didn't know what it meant, but I just found the CPL tag down in the frame that has CPL #1551. and the pump part # is 0402736887. The CPL I found to be from a 190hp motor. But I wonder if the pump is even a mate with the front case so the CPL may be off. Anyone know for sure? Or where I could find out plunger specs to time it?(I have no idea how the shop managed to time it without knowing what it was  , maybe the tag hadn't fallen off yet then. ) I know it didn't come in a Ram if it is a 190hp pump, so what are some of the applications it could've come from? Does it have the 181 DV's like the 215 pump? or the smaller 180 ones? or different all together. Looking for any help, I've been searching all day, haven't been able to find anything.

On the driver's side of the pump on a tag that's riveted on, some of it's rubbed off so they may be off a little, but the last 6 digits I'm sure of.

The reason I ask is I have a '95 that I was told had a '97 pump in it. I have found both numbers on the side of the pump and the very back. I have posted the numbers on here with no luck on identifying it????

Cpl# 1551

My F650 has a CPL# 1551, it is a medium duty engine with 16. 5 jugs verses 17. 5 jugs in the Ram. It was rated a 190HP but has been upgraded with a #11 plate, 330HP marine injectors, and HX40. It now produces 38lbs. boost w/1350 EGT's, I have no issues or stumbles with the engine at any RPM. If you go to PDR site @ http://www.piersdiesel.com/TechPTiming.htm he shows the timing for CPL# 1551, but rated @ 160HP.

What does that mean exactly? Smaller plungers in the pump?

Does that mean I'm no better off than if I had a 160 pump?

I'm referring to the pistons (jugs); the medium duty engines have lower compression ratios to help offset the higher duty cycle of medium duty engine. Similar to a marine engine that also uses lower compression pistons.

The pumps should be similar if not the same but I'm no pump expert.

In my '97 I had a BD 3k-rpm 300 hp pump. The CPL was 1839 ( I think ). I don't know what it came out of, but I couldn't find it on a list of pumps that came with any Dodge pick-up. The old pump had a tst 230 hp plate in it. I couldn't tell the difference, except it would wind-up to 3000 rpm. In my opinion, it wasn't worth the extra $1500.

Your pump number is for the early CPL #2023 used in 1996 215 hp Rams. It was timed stock at 12. 5 deg, while cpl 2175 used later in 1996-98 was at 13. 5 deg. It's the "good" pump to make power. If you are very clean when removing a delivery valve holder and valve assembly, you won't do any harm. The 215 hp plungers have a "groove" across the top of the plunger. The others are flat topped (except that you can see the end of the helix cut at the edge).

Joseph, Glad to hear it. That just made my day a whole lot better. So I should NOT use the 1551 cpl when I retime it, use the 2023 instead? Is that correct? After verifying of course that it has the grooves in the plunger.

Animal, ok thanks, I got you now. I ussually work on bigger motors and I think of jugs as the piston sleeves, got confused, of course, that's not hard to do :D

Thanks for the help guys, I really appriciate it.

Use the plunger lift specs for 2023 or 2175. I suggest for best mpg and decent mid range torque that you go for 15. 5 deg or 5. 43 mm lift. Be careful the extension on the dial indicator is firmly on the plunger and doesn't slip into the groove and mess up your lift when rotating the engine.
