Cummins Dakota

4BT and Jeep

I have a 1975 Ford F-600 4X4 with a 361 Ford industrial engine (the world's slowest) and I want to put a first generation Cummins in the truck. I also have the transmission and transfer case out of a wrecked 1992 1 ton pick-up. I want to know if I should use the original Clarke 4 speed transmission and if it will mount to the Cummins, or should I use the getrag transmission and 203 transfer case.

Wow, should be a cool puller.

I imagine that the Clark 4 speed is NOT an overdrive transmission, and that the axle ratio's are low (that is high numerically). You're probably going to want to, at the very least, go with the getrag (or something stouter), to keep the engine RPM down.

The transfer case on the '92 Dodge is an all gear NP205, not a 203. The Dodge front driveshaft comes out on the passenger side and the Ford (at least up to a 1 ton), comes out on the drivers side. You're either going to have to change the transfercase or the front axle and being the F600, I believe the transfer case would be easier. One possibility would be to use the NP241 out of a "94 or newer Dodge which does have the front driveshaft on the drivers side. OR, you could do it the way I'm doing my "87 Ford Dually 4X and convert to the Ford 205 transfercase. This does get a little entailed, but it is possible.

If you're interest in the 205 route, just PM me and I'll try to walk you through the way I converted mine, by mating the Dodge 205 with the Ford 205.

Dennis... .

F-600 repower.

I've got a '75 F-600 that had a 361 industrial and a 4-speed and

I repowered it with a 427 Chev industrial/Allison AT-540 and I

wish that I had put a 5. 9 or 8. 3 Cummins in it. The truck has a

6. 80 Rockwell rear end in it so I would have to change out the

rear gears and use an overdrive transmission to make the diesel a good

viable engine to use and I just couldn't it do it at the time I did the

swap. Pulling the same weight with my Ram with 3. 54 gears it will

easily walk away from my F-600 and you don't even want to know

what my fuel mileage is with the gasser.

Is the transfer case married or divorced? If its divorced, as I suspect, you can use any 2wd trans you want, and just modify the intermediate shaft if you have to. I would think it wouldn't be too hard to set it up with an auxiliary trans, or a 7 or 9 speed out of another medium duty.
