Sooo it all started one stormy night, the sky was black. The animals were hiding..... soot filled the air.....

Actually it did, and my windows did not want to go up! :-laf

So the saga of the window motors started. I am posting this info so everyone is aware of what to be watching for.

For those that are unaware, there were two different PW motors for the 1st gens: One for 89/90 and one for 91. 5 -93.

If you are getting new PW motors from the aftermarket, they are likely made by Doorman. Doorman is a reputable brand, but beware, they list the PW motor for 89-93. This is an error and does not really work! Read on.

So this is the PW motors, new and old. The left is the 89/90 style, and right is 91. 5-93. The new motor is a Doorman motor.

Now the motors themselves do the same thing and have the same bolt pattern. The issue is in the gear. The old one has a pilot pin, the newer does not. This creates an issue when you go to install.

See how much taller the motor and gear are?

So for the regulator now. The clean one is a Doorman and the old Dodge NOS.

Now lets look closer at it. Here is the old one: (notice the pilot pin in the center as I left the original motor on for this shot)

Now the Doorman:

So what does this mean? Look closer:

The left one in the above shot has a large cutout in the regulator for the gear. The old one has a small hole for the pilot pin. So if you now look back at the top pics where you can see how much taller the gear on the Doorman motor is, you will understand why the area is cut out on the regulator. It needs the clearance.

So what does all this blabbing mean? It means if you are wanting to replace the PW motors on your 89 or 90, you also need the regulators; or you will need to do some BOMBing to the regulator. ;) If you buy one for a 91. 5+ truck, you should be fine.

Everyone following? :D

I am cheap and have a hole saw that would convert that old one nicely. :D

Good to know on the motors though as am sure there are at least 2 of the 6 I own are looking for TLC.

DV (hey, cool. Your initials are delivery valve! :D)

I would love to comment on your question, but I dont know. I have not personally worked on a 84-85 so I am unsure of what they have.

One question. Why would you want to convert to manual windows? Or did you mean convert to PW?

You really need to descrie how the heck to remove the motor from a 1991-1993. I don't think you mentioned R&R of the motor and of the regulator for that year(s), then againyou are working on a 1990 right?

The 1990 is super easy to R&R the motor, I have yet to figure out how on my 1992.

Lots of beer and swearing. That's how I usually do it. :D

Don't forget the Bandaids for ALL the nicks and cuts on the sharp edges they left in there. I swear they did that on purpose so a person had to pay in blood and skin to swap them. #@$%!

Drill holes over the bolts you can't get to, or, remove the regulator and motor as a unit. The latter will definitely give you opportunity to excercise a certian portion of your vocabulary. :-laf

LOL Yup. That is normally how to do it! Swear, cuts, slices (almost needed stitches from drivers door), loss of knuckles (passenger door removed a knuckle top), and a mouth like a sailor!

Yeah. Patience is key. Takes a few hours a door.

I get tired of the windows not working correctly or not at all . , Ive heard that some of those regulators are welded into place is that true ???

No. They should be bolted or riveted. Have never come across anything saying welded. That would be a stupid thing to do as you would not be able to service them.

Ive heard from some one that some thing was rivited maybe the doors ??????, im not shure , maybe the freind had a brain fart ??

Rivited yes. Welded no.

I think all the early regulators were riveted in (maybe till 93 - not sure. Have not had the fortune of getting to work on a virgin 91+).

Yeah, my '89 was riveted. It's bolted now. My window on the drivers side was not working when I bought the truck. I figured the motor was fried. When I started working on it, I found out it hummed fine when I pressed the up or down button, but would not drive the window. I drilled out the big aluminum pop rivets, donated blood and skin as was mentioned before when I fished out the regulator. No real science there, just long sleeves and patience.

After removing the motor from the regulator frame, I tested it with a battery. It would run, but the gear wouldn't turn. It took the gear head apart and found that these motors are built with a sort of clutch in them to quit driving if the motor jams. If memory serves, the clutch consists of 3 plastic balls in pockets around that final drive gear. I found them shattered in the case. After substituting 3 metal ball bearings, the motor ran great.

Not that I am happy to see someone in pain, but I am glad I am not the only one that has blood issues when doing these. ;)

Hey Robert can you tell me if the wireing is the same from 89 to 93 ? reason being on my crewcab 1 door will be a 93 and other will be 89 I know the 89 doesn't have a power Mirror but that's easy to swap out just didn't want to have to swap everything over if I don't have to . Thank's You Da man when it comes to theses truck's and how they work

I try.

Further confirmation f this is the fact that the power window motor from Doorman is useable for 89-1993. Harness has to be the same.

:-laf why you guys have so many problems getting cut and bleeding working on this windows LOL jk I was cut and p!ssed by the end of the night. And not to get to far off subject HOW the #@$%! do ya get the darn vent window out of the doors
