17.5" Trailer Tires

Trailer Tires

HI All,

I recently bought a 1989 D250 PU. Dose anybody know what the factory tow rating on this truck is?... Mine has the 3 sp 727 trans and I assume the 3. 08 rear end. I do not have the under bed trans cooler but I did add a large plate type trans cooler from DTT.

Thanks

Andrew

On a 1990 truck, it's 12,000 GCW or 14,000 GCW with super cooler. That's with 3. 55 gears. Scale truck, substrate from GCW and that would be trailer weight.

HI,

Thanks for the info... Any Idea how much less towing cap with 3. 08 Gearing Vs 3. 55 gearing?... . Would it be a straight percentage reduction? In this case say about a 13. 2% reduction in towing ability because of the higher gearing?

Andrew

I'd check the ratio first. You can count teeth or just count how many times the driveshaft turns for one turn of the wheel. I don't know how much of a reduction 3. 08 gears would be. 3. 08 gears would make it very slow to get up to speed and a dog on hills. If you do have 3. 08 gears, I wouldn't tow very heavy. If truck does have 3. 08 gears, would be a good on fuel for highway trips and a daily driver.

I have 3:08's in my truck. When I tow I limit it to no more than 12K. You will be slow on take off. When you see a hill coming up. "Stand on it" before the hill. LOL
