My 1991 dodge W250 has burned through 3 voltage regulators in the past two months and I was wondering what could cause this issue. If some one could help me figure this out it would be super fantastic. and yes the voltage regulator is separate from the alternator. both alternator and voltage regulator are new and lifetime warranty.

Have You checked the PCM under the left front fender.
They don't do much, BUT, IIRC it monitors the charging system and the pre-heat circuit.
It may also control the cruise control. Worth a look?
I did swap out my PCM on the '91.5 with a used unit from a used truck parts yard. Everything worked great after the swap.
You might also try cleaning the contacts to the PCM?

There are other Folks here that can provide more information on the old PCM in the first Generation Trucks.
Its just one possibly overlooked item that is out of sight, out of mind!
Hope this helps?

The aftermarket voltage regulators never worked as well or lasted as long as the oem version.Sadley I don't think they are available anymore. You might want to make sure the ckts are not running crazy amperage through them.

I had the same issue for years it drove me nuts, I finally figured it out. The plug onto the voltage regulator on the firewall wore out. it got loose. Hit a bump it would shift position and runaway charge, Just go to the autoparts store and buy a new plug. $10 later and I haven't seen the issue for years.

I had the whole wiring harness fail on my 89. Everywhere the harness was spliced the road sailt got in and took out the wires. I ended up replacing the under hood harness. and my strange electrical issues went away including the rapid failing of the voltage reg's.

Look up Alternatorman on Utube and alternatorparts.com you need P/N C8313 This is Heavy Duty for our trucks works great. I bought the harness kit and a spare Regulator. My is a Early 1991 Dodge Cummins. Let me know what you do. Make sure you run a ground wire from case ground on Regulator to case on Alternator!
Follow instrutions. Better see Utube!
