My friend has a 1992 that developed a problem yesterday. He was driving down the freeway with the cruise on and it started increasing speed. He then found that the throttle had no effect on the engine and it now will not idle and wants to rev up all the time. He's checked the throttle linkage and it appears to be working okay. He's wondering if something in the pump broke which is making it rev up all the time. He managed to drive it home but has to shut it off at each stop since the engine only wants to run at top speed.

Anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it?

There was a recall on these pumps for this problem about Aug-Sept 94

Very dangerous DC paid to have my truck towed in when this happened because it was a gov't recall. I would not drive truck with this problem.

If I remember correctly about the pump recall, there is a fulcrum pin in the pump that falls off and sets up a high fuel rate. Hope this helps.

The recall came out in May 94.
Safety recall #605.
This recall was for injection pumps manufactured between March and September,1991. Check the data plate on the injection pump for a date code of 163,164,165,166,167,168,or 169. The date code is on the bottom line of the data plate.
If your's has one of the date codes check the data plate for a infinity symbol(looks like a small number eight laying on it's side) if it has the infinity symbol the pump has already been repaired. If not check with your dealer.

Had my pump changed under the recall, I think it only affects the trucks with standard transmission. Took a long time for the dealer to get the parts kit in, had to chase the dealer and Chrysler a fair amount. Might be better to get this recall done at a Cummins dealer.

Hi IronTrader,

I concur with the guys above. My younger brother had the same problem on his 92. (About 5-6 years ago now). There was a safety recall and it should not be restricted to manual trannies. If the pump has a flaw, it makes no difference what type of trans. you have I would think. His pump was replaced by a DC Dealer in our area with no questions or problems. The flaw was a spring or metering failure causing WOT condition. FWIW

Now you guys have me worried. I bought a new 92 and never had a recall notice. The 91 1/2 motor I bought to go in my crew cab might have the same pump. I need to look. If they are the recall pumps, then what do I do?

I dug around and found my recall notice #605. It says "Chrysler Corporation has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle saftey exists in some 1991,1992,and 1993 model Dodge Ram Pick-up trucks equipped with a diesel engine. A pin inside the fuel injection pump may break. This may cause the engine fuel supply system to open to full throttle engine speed, which could result in an accident without prior warning" It was a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall so maybe if you were to contact them they might be able to tell you if your truck has been repaired. The phone number on the notice is 1-800-424-9393 but remember this was 7/15/94 when mine was done. There is no engine or pump numbers on the recall notice either. I have a piece of paper stating it was done so there must be proof on the other end, be it Dodge or the NHTSA, that it was done.

Unclebilly, the data plate is down low on the side of the injection pump behind the end of the KSB soleniod.

You can contact any Chrysler dealer. They can call up your vehicle ID# and tell you if it's been done. That is unless someone had it worked on by an independant shop at some time. It's worth a try.

In my case, my pump has no data plate - I'm sure of it. Unless it it on the negine side of the pump.

If my pump hasn't been recalled (i have a 91), then would the Dodge Dealer replace it? Remeber, this is 2001, and this recall was made a long time ago. Would they still replace it? And if so, what kind of fee would I be looking at?
