I'm having a low engine oil pressure problem in my 1995 5. 9L diesel Cummins engine. After the engine is warmed up, at idle it goes to 0, sped up to 1500 rpm, and will go to 45-50 psi. I have a manual gauge installed. Any thoughts or suggestions for this problem.

Thanks

I agree. I would verify first that your gauge reading is accurate. I don't remember the last time, if ever, that I have heard of one of these engines with a true oil pressure problem. I had a factory sender go out on my former '01 at one point.

I'd bet a reasonable sum, ($10) that it's only the sender. Had to replace on the 95 and the wife's 98. Cummins is your best choice. The NAPA unit will work,,,,for a while. Only issue is the original part number sender is getting dang hard to find (and I don't currently have the number to share, wish I did).

You should try a different manual gauge before you do anything else. You say that you have a manual gauge, does it have a sending unit or is it direct with a tube????

How many miles on the engine??? Did this happen all of a sudden or has there been a gradual decline in oil pressure at idle??

It is rare for these engines to have an oil pressure issue. There is however, a regulator in the oil filter housing that can stick and cause low oil pressure.

Do the basics first and let us know what you find.

I had same problem on mine, when the engine was heated up,oil pressure dropped so low alarm trigged. replaced transmitter, problem solved
