The truck that I am about to buy does not shift right. The speedo shows about 7 MPH fast as compared to the GPS. Is this something that is done at the dealer with a scan tool, or is it the old way with a gear?

Will the speedo being off cause erratic shifts?

How do I find out what gear I need to correct the speedo? I have done fords before when regearing, but this is becuase of larger tires. Is there a way I can find the original?

I have never worked with a Dodge on this as mine is electronic so I have a box to correct mine. I have also worked correcting Fords. Here is a site that will help with part numbers but I couldn't tell you how many teeth you need: Dodge Ram Specifications

I'm sure someone will chime in who has done this.

Basically I have narrowed this down to 2 possiblities. The dealers are no help around my area. Some say gear and others say electronic. Does anyone know the this gets changed in the PCM or a gear like older vehicles?

It is a gear change.
Check out the table from JeepsUnlimited . The gear part numbers are shown near the bottom of the page. You need the shor gear. It is very easy to remove the ecoder drive with the gear from the tail shaft (T-case or transmission).
Just picked up a 33T for my '96 1500 from Mopar Parts America $13. 50 shipped. You can also use this Jeep speedo gear applet and it will tell you the number of teeth but you need to see the first site for a PN.

Its a gear. Try finding a shop that checks that speedometer is correct, they can set you up with correct gear. We have a A/C shop in the Orlando area that does it.
