Checking for codes

Bring a pencil and paper to write down the numbers.

Key in the ignition, engine off

Turn the ignition to the run/on position (do not start)

Back to off

On

Off

On and leave on. Leave the ignition in each position at least 3/4 of a second. If you are too fast, or too slow, it will not complete the cycle.

In the odometer window the on board computer will show two sets of codes (if any) PCU and ECU followed by P DONE.

Here is a link to the generic OBD code definitions.

I bought a program for my laptop at

http://obd-2.com/#home. Just as expensive as some of the simple scanners at the auto parts stores, but this does soooo much more.

It should, it is a standard their vehicles. Try it again.

re:code reader

Sticks,

I just went out and try-ed it and it worked Oo.

I have a code set of P1693. I had the fuel filter canister off the truck and when i reinstalled it i forgot to plug the fuel heater in and water separator plug back in. My check engine light came on for a short time like 5 min. The fuel heater and the water separator plug i reconnected and check engine light went out. Oo.

But it lift a code the P1693. I hope thats all it is:confused:

The dealer said i did not have the capability on the 02 trucks and i try ed it at that time and did not work for me. Must of done it to fast:D

Thank you very much for the info

David

David,

Find another dealer. I have tried this on our trucks, we know that works, 2 Dodge vans at work, and some random gasser car made by Dodge. Worked on all of them, as well as the holding the trip reset in when you turn the key on to test the instrument cluster.

The only way to get rid of the 1693 is to have it cleared by an OBDII scanner, Auto Zone does it for free. Glad to hear you got it to work!

Sticks

I just checked my codes this past weekend while servicing the truck and found the following codes. P0500, P0234 and P1693. I understand that the P1693 can be ignored, but what about the others? I am concerned with the turbo boost limit exceeded code. It appears that a lot of people have received the speed sensor code. My truck is bone stock. Is there anything to be worried about?

Thanks

Just a big thank you to sticks for a very informative and helpful post. :) :D Oo.

lot of ******* contests and argueing going on these days not to mention any names :-{}

Older trucks do in fact have a way to read codes. On my 1995 you do the on - off - on - off - on cycle within three seconds and then watch the "Check Engine" light. You will get two groups of flashes that are two digit codes from 11 up to 63. A 55 code will be the last code. This is all described in the factory service manual along with a description of the trouble codes.

Could you tell us how you service manual descibes and what the codes mean?

what codes do you want the definition for wildwest? and also set up your signature so we know what kind of truck you have. it will help alot.

Help. Xmission problems in Baja 700 miles south of border

l999 D. diesel 24v, 4X4 3/4 tn 105,000 miles, warrantee just expired!!!I'm 250 miles north of LaPaz (nearest Dodge dealer) in small town named Loreto.

Tran suddenly without warning, decided to not shift to second, sped up to 4,000 rpm's no shift to 2nd. (no prior problems) Parked it. Went for lunch.

Came back drove off with NO problem. Several stops & starts and sometimes it would shift to 2nd & 3rd, sometimes it wouldn't shift to 2nd. I'm afraid to drive it to LaPaz!!!! Anyone know if it can be hurt if I do drive it should I be able to get it to shift into other gears. There will be some stops necessary driving because of intersections on the way down. Reverse works great. Will driving it create "other problems" should it suddenly decide to downshift to 1st, or is that possible? I'm hung up here until I can resolve this. Is it electrical or IN the transmission. I have appointment with a Mexican transmission mechanic in 4 hours from this posting. I'll be "hanging here" seeking some advise. I have ZERO mechanical ability (yeah I know. What the heck am I doing in Mexico then/)!!!!!!!! Thanks to any & all who might know beside the shifting cable potential I found on another link> Phil R Or email me at -- email address removed --
