I have a 1996 2500 5 speed and my back up lights do not come on when i put it in reverse. I have checked the fuse. I'm thinkin that maybe the back up switch is not hooked up (hasn't worked since transmission was taken out and re-installed). I am asking for info on where exactly the switch is and how to get to it. And also maybe some other places to look if it turns out not to be the switch.

Oh and one last thing, do the back up switches go bad? Thanks for your help.

my reverse light switch went out..... 65 dollar part from the dodge house... . i cant remember the exact part number. im sure someone will chime in with that part number.

Back up switches do go bad and as for where it is, I am not sure. Climb under and have a look. There are not that many sensors on a manual transmission. I would start by looking on the side by all the lingage, it should be really obvious.

You might check with Standard trans or Blumenthals for the part. If they carry it then you save some bucks over the dealers price.

If your transmission has been out chances are it didn't get hooked back up.

Crawl under the drivers side of the truck and feel up around the top middle of the transmission, and look for a lose plug to be hanging down.

I've done that before too! :-laf

guys thanks for all the help. i found the back up light switch. its on top of the transmission just in front of the hole where your shifters go into the cab. can be easily reached by crawling under from the driver side and found by the brown and purple wires running to the connector that goes to the switch. the switch was good and everything hooked up and ended up being a wire. it was by luck that i found it. thanks again for all your help.

Is this switch adjustable? Mine flickers when I put it in to reverse.

From what I can tell the switch is not adjustable. all I can feel is the place where you plug the connector into on the outside of the transmission. Everyhting else seems to be inside and I didn't take the siwitch out to see how it works. I know it has a hex shape at the bottom of the plug to use a socket/wrench but don't know what size.

If I recall correctly it's an 22mm (deep socket).

The switch is a ball switch (or least that is what I call it). The ball (metal) gets pushed in by a bar when in reverse making contact with contact points.

One wire is hot the other one goes to the back-up lights.
