2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission 1996 vin number

I took my 1996 Ram 2500 4x4 in to have the front axle seals changed. When the shop checked the vin number at Dodge to get the seals the vin shows it is a two wheel drive, it came new as a 4x4. Any thoughts on why?

It has to be something like that, it defintely came from the factory as a 4x4

Is your 5th digit an "F" or a "C"?

"F" is a 4x4 and "C" is a 4x2 according to this website:

http://dodgeram.org/tech/specs/VIN_decode.htm

with the last 8 of the vin I can double check what they have told you
