Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 1997 fan clutch

1997 1 ton 12 valve.



Fan clutch shot & is causing problems with not pulling enough air through the AC condenser.



Called Cummins & they said the fan clutch is a Mopar dealer part only.



Is this true ? or does someone know of a Cummins part # for the fan clutch ?

mwilson could find out. But auto part stores would have them. Is the fan free spinning (no resistance)when you spin it?



Mine fan clutch froze when it decided to retire. Not complaining had aboot 275,000 on it.

Fan is free wheelin' even when at operating temperature & it was 105 degrees in Tucson Arizona today to top it off.

Engine is not running hot but... . fan does not suck enough air across the A/C condenser to operate the A/C properly . {Freon level checked & it is fully charged}.

Dodge Dealer wants about $200 for a OEM Mopar fan clutch unit.

I sourced the aftermarket Four Seasons unit at around $60 but... . I bet it is crapo part.

I have always been able to buy Mopar dealer parts for way cheaper if I go directly to Cummins but.....
I guess this time around I will have to swallow my pride & pony up the $200 & go with a quality OEM Mopar part.

Fan clutch is a Mopar item, engine would have been shipped from Cummins to Dodge without a fan clutch. Cummins stopped at the fan drive and pulley with the left hand thread stub. From there out it was the OEM designed clutch and fan.

And when you pull the fan, check it for any cracks on the blades. There has been cases that a blade came off.

I usually try to go with OE, but now have a NAPA fan clutch on mine. The last three weeks have been some heavy towing, over 3k miles, and it has worked flawlessly and often. I don't remember exactly but think it was a Canada manufacture.

I have had nothing but bad luck with the after market Auto Zone, warranty for life, clutches. I went back to OEM and will continue to do so. In fact, I just replaced mine again a few weeks ago. From Mopar4Less it was $163. 80 to my front door. If you call them, verify internet pricing.

Both local Dodge dealers quoted $209 PLUS tax for the Mopar clutch.

A little shopping around saved $70.

buy the mopar part!... lots of the aftermarket clutches don't seem to work correctly in our trucks, I also changed mine recently mopar parts online was the best price.

Got it all apart but whoever replaced the fan clutch last ,cross threaded the hub to to fan clutch stud.

Fan clutch is a Mopar item, engine would have been shipped from Cummins to Dodge without a fan clutch. Cummins stopped at the fan drive and pulley with the left hand thread stub. From there out it was the OEM designed clutch and fan.

Interesting to work on a system that is 1/2 Cummins & 1/2 Dodge & have to deal with 2 separate entities to complete a seemingly simple job.


Turns out the stripped hub & bearing are Cummins Factory only parts. Both local Dodge dealers quoted a 14 day delivery time on the hub & bearing if they "special" ordered it.

Called Inland Kenworth & they were able to locate both parts directly from the Cummins factory.

The factory was nice enough to offer overnight shipping but on Friday afternoon... that means Monday.

You can get the Cummins parts from Mopar but they are a lot more money so I always point folks in the direction of Cummins when possible. That bearing is available from Motion Industries for a lot less money. I am on an I-pad right now away from home and my notes. The part number is on here somewhere from a few years back, Cerb and I went through this. His instructions for pressing it apart and reassembling are in here as we'll. I can try to search those two posts up later on tonight if you can't find them.

I was in a tough spot & just went ahead & ordered both parts from the Cummins factory.

Fan hub is Cummins part # 3911661 $137. 00
Bearing is Cummins part # 3910739 $119. 00

We already have the bearing removed & it looks like a pretty straight forward install.
