Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 1997 nv 4500 transmission removal

when we try to remove the shifter it feels like it is going to break. I guess this is a stupid question but how do you get the shifter removed from the transmission shaft?#@$%!

From the top, once you pull the leather boot up, you can see a spring loaded collar in the houosing. Although Dodge shows a special tool for this in their manual, I was able to press the collar down with two screwdrivers and rotate it 90deg, then it pops up and the shifter is free to come out

IIRC you rotate it CCW to remove.

went out and pulled and it slid off the top of shaft.

OK. . now for the rest of the Story. This is my Cousins CTD. Her SIL (my cousin) was going to do the work and wanted to know if he could use my shop and 2 post lift. No problem, he had help he thought. The help did not arrive. using the download program that went around here for a while was a HUGE help. As first asked... . how to get the shifter off the shift post? That turned out to be the hardest part. I did a search (Excellent tool) and found the answer. Thanks all for the help. Brian
