Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 1997 starting probs.

My sons truck-1997 auto- has been displaying some interesting starting probs.

The truck will some times not start after letting the manifold heater cycle, then if he trys to restart without using the the heater ie. going right to crank without stopping at the on position for the heater the engine will start.

I had him try starting it both ways and it will not start either way if given enough trys. The starting system cranks fast so the battery and starter seem good.

Check the fuel solenoid. It should pull up when the key is turned to the start position. If it does not check the fuel solenoid relay. If it is working ok, check the blue fusable link that is on the positive post of the battery. If that is ok, the test the fuel solenoid to see if the pull on coil is working. Lots of stuff in this forum about the details in doing that.
