I have a 1998 Ram Diesel 24 valve that I just turned off and now it won't start. Does the crank position sensor stop it from starting? There is fuel to the injection pump and it seems like all the relays are okay too. Any other possibilities on why it won't start?

Fill in your signature so people know exactly what you got.

Has it been running bad for awhile or anything strange its been doing ?

You simply shut it down and then no start? you didn't do any work on the truck?

First thing I would check is the "fuel system" relay in the under hood fuse box located behind the driver side battery. I have had issues with the electrical connections on that relay with my truck.

Second would be to check the injection pump wiring harness connection, make sure its pushed all the way on and tight(harness is on back side injection pump, closest to the fire wall).

If all that fails crack open a couple of injector lines and turn over the engine and check for fuel flow.

You may also have a bad lift pump that has just started to show.

If none of this stuff works post back and ill continue with diagnostics :)

It stumbled in the morning when I started it. Then I turned it off when I got to where I was going and it will not start. No other work done on it.

98 ram 2500 4x4 24 valve. Stock everything.

The fuel pump relays are alright. The lift pump is putting out approx 14lbs of pressure. I didn't crack any injector lines as the truck is 25 miles away. I did push on the connections on the back of the injector pump. Any other suggestions on things to look at since I have to drive to it to check it out. I didn't want to drive there and only crack the injector lines and come home. Do you have any other ideas of things to check for while I am there. I was thinking it could be the crank position sensor??

it may be the vp44---mine didn't like to start and it didn't matter if it was hot or cold--sometimes it took 10 times of trying to start it before she fired--just don't crank her over more than like 10 seconds at a time or you'll munch your starter and the batteries will go dead--code wise it showed 0253 and 1688 but no 0216... ... chris

Well then it very well could be the crank sensor.

unfortunately being an early 24 valve you can't check your codes without a scanner.

Get it scanned and go from there, or stick a new sensor on it and hope for the best.

Well, I just trailered the truck home (hit the block wall taking it off the trailer and dented the back end! So much for saving on towing costs!) I cracked open the fuel injector lines. It took some time, but fuel eventually ran to all of them. I couldn't get to the one closest to the firewall, but the others flowed. I installed the crank position sensor and that didn't fix the problem either. Any other suggestions? I am assuming this is going to be an expensive repair. .

Where can I buy one of these scanners??

Thanks for everyones help. Unfortunately, I had to buy the injection pump. I will post and let you know if that solves the problem once it is installed. The local auto parts store lends out code readers and they all pointed to the injection pump.
