My truck just dies going down the road , it completly shuts down . But in a minute it will crank and usually runs fine. It may do it twice in same day , or it may be two weeks. I have a fuel pressure gauge,and the fuel pressure after the filter stays at 14 psi at idle and full throttle never drops below 10 Psi . I have allready changed the cam sensor, and considering the crank sensor, but i get no codes for these when i pull the codes . I am thinking the apps. . Has any one ever heard of these maybe causing a sparatic shutdown problem. It always seems to do this on the Highway at around 70 Mph. Usually when i step on the gas hard on a back road it may do it. But i can't make it do it , it just an erratic thing usually when i least expect it. Its been happenning for a 2 months.

So far i have changed cam sensor , cleaned iat sensor, unplugged fpcm plug and cleaned, put new dielectric grease on the connectors. I get two codes when this happens a p1693 and a p1688 code. I only get these codes when problem arrives. THe P1693 is a internal fuel injection pump controller failure.

and the p1688 is a dtc exists in jtec mode. temperature doesn't matter when it happens. Oo. Oo. :confused: :confused: :(



Any help would be greatly appreciated,its driving me crazy.

My truck is a1998. 5 24valve 4 wheel drive , i live in sc ,temp 140,000 miles on truck , automatic , no modifications. k+n filter , superchips programmer
 
looks like the dreaded vp-44 failure. do you have gauges? if so whats the fuel pressure at wot. ? if the lift pump has low or no pressure, and has been that way for some time, the injection pump is probably failing. hope not .
 
i have very good fuel pressure , at idle i have 14-16 psi at wot i have never any less than 10-12 psi? Any thing else to check?
 
I have the same year and engine as you. The axact same thing is happening to me. No performance enhancement. I Have a post on this on the next page. I recalibrated the APPS and the truck is doing the same thing. Fuel presure is good even at WOT.

Some one at TDR must have and ideal what is doing this.

Maybe writing to the editor, they might know a diesel gourou some where that could help us.
 
The 1688 code is fuel injection pump internal failure... ... ... ... . quit spinning your wheels and buy the pump. Be sure to verify fuel delivery also,216 can be low fuel pressure or flow not just vp-44. Sorry for the bad news but with the 24 valve it is not if but when.
