Hi:

My son is looking to buy a 1999 3500 4x4 quad cab with 5 speed trans, and we were wondering if anyone could give us an idea on what to expect for mileage please.

Highway vs. city vs. all-round, empty and loaded.

What difference with the 4. 10 vs the 3. ?? ratio too, we're not sure what it has (where do we look?).

Also, any issues we should be on the lookout for in general on the rig?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Looking around TDR is the best first step. My first CTD was the exact truck you describe, with the 3. 73 rear end. Many of these are the "53" block castings, which can be problematic. Also make sure you have a Fuel Pressure gauge, as the lift pumps are prone to failure. Once they let go, you will be replacing the high pressure fuel pump; these are quite expensive. I had my truck to well over 100K; I had no problems with any of the above. Run clean fuel from a source that sells a lot of fuel - I buy Love's exclusively - and change your filters often. I ran Fleetguard oil, fuel and air filters only. I bought them at the local Kenworth store pretty cheap.

I saw city mileage around 15. 9 to 17 range, up to low 20s when on the interstate. My truck seemed to have a "sweet spot" around 65 MPH. The very best upgrade I ever made on this truck were to put Michelin XPS Tractions size 235-85-R16s on. Pricey, but you won't be sorry.

The rear end information will be on the "build tag" sticker just under the hood. It will tell you about the color, limited slip rear end, etc.

Lastly, beware of rigs with lots of gauges, evidence of tuner boxes, etc. Highly bombed trucks may have been horse whipped and you don't want to inherit those problems.

Best of luck
