Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 2 second delay

I would like to put a larger Turbo on to get more power and maybe cut down on some of the smoking at cruise. However I need power at the low-end since my Cummins is happily idling down the road at the speed limit. Can anyone recommend a Turbo and another chip to stack on top my Superchip. I would like to shoot for a Max of 400 to 450 hp. But I don't want my EGT's to go through the roof at the low RPMs I currently run the engine at.

Does anyone has any recomendations to which unit I should refit to the Cummins. The ATS Aurora 500 sounds to be a super Turbo but seems to be to big for my application. The Dodge Super "B" Single turbo sounds like it could do the job but what about the PDR HX40 Turbo. Whats best?

------------------------------------------------

1999 5spd,sbd,quad,Gear Vendors 2spd,BFGoodrichMT 315's,6" longarm lift, 3. 54rear, Superchip,Volant intake, 4"ss exhaust, 5 in. Bull Horn stacks, custom light bar 6 Black Magic's, massive Trail-Ready front bumper/Brush guard (half cowcatcher and half basket ball goal) 12,000 lb. WARN, I fabricated 1/2" plate back bumper wth swing out tire carrier. So she is pretty heavy and pretty dirty aerodynamically, a lot like pushing a locomotive down the road…. at least it looks like one. People are all kind now and don’t pull out in front of me anymore. With the Turbo wine and the throaty 5 in. stacks it sounds like a Kenworth and I'm loving it. Right now it averages 20 to 21mpg with 23 nursing it… with a tailwind.

The engine idles at 900 but in double overdrive (8th) will do 50mph at 1000 rpm. I don't run it in double over at such low rpm but do run 65 mph at 1250 rpm and 75 mph at 1500 rpm…. so 3000rpm would-be 150mph and we don’t want to go there with my BFGoodrich Mud Terrains. My EGT’s average between 800F and 1000F (1100F max) with beautiful contrails. Dodge in all their brilliance controls the cruise control with the computer and the computer looks at my speed and my RPMs and has decided that there is no way that the truck to be going that fast and the engine going that slow so it refuses to engage in 8th. I asked one of my local Dodge dealers if they could reprogram my computer so it would engage in double over. To no avail they can’t reprogram it so I'll have to put an aftermarket cruise control on the RAM. However that's not my question at this time, I currently have the problem solved and started a Redneck Urban Legend with an EASTON cruise control.

Uhhhmm... .

. . Actually, with that crazy transmission, you would probably want a little LESS turbo.

At least look into a hybrid, I know you need a SMALLER exhaust housing and MAYBE a bigger (slightly) compressor wheel

HY-9 exhaust housing and an HX-40 wheel stuffed into a milled out HX-35 compressor?

Somebody say J. R. Adkins?

Right on! Love my souped up Diesel.

It has a 2. 26 rear end ratio with all the tyrannies in high (8th) I don’t know how fast it will go, it will go to 120mph in old 5th and felt like a Locomotive as it climbed up there. If I ever get the setup right and I’m crazy enough to see what 3000rpm is like at Bonneville the numbers say that it would go 150mph, I would have to clean up the truck aerodynamically and add a lot of power to have the torque to turn that rpm.

Thanks for the advice I am also considering the PDR HX35 since it can spin up faster. Piers Diesel Research makes a hybrid like you recommended. They install a bigger pinwheel on the compressor side then machines out the housing to closer tolerances. It works with 12cm, 14cm, and 16cm exhaust housings and down pipes. But Piers Literature states their modified HX40 with a 16cm housing will spool up like a 14cm and allow me to build my engine up to the 400-450hp…which I would like to have someday. Otherwise I will be limited to 350hp.

Has anyone tried any of the ball bearing turbos like Edge put out?

I hear they spin up much faster, deliver more air, and are loud…sounds like heaven to me.

Actually I’m not into going that fast, I just like the acceleration that the Cummins puts out with its torque…and dearly love the smell of Diesel in the morning, going through all the gears with the sound of the Stacks and whine of the turbo. It is more music to my ears than any Stereo system on the planet.

The Young kids can have all of their pocket rockets with their thumpers pounding…it is all plastic and make-believe. Nothing beats the real world of raw brute diesel power…If Conan lived today… the real “Riddle of Steel” would have Cummins stamped on it.
