I just got my Mag Hytec pan in.

I did not drain anything but the pan and the filter. The shop manual says that requires only 1. 5 quarts of oil to be added.

The Mag Hytec is supposed to be 4 quarts over stock. From that I figured 5. 5 quarts. I have now added 7 quarts and it is close to the min level.

I tried driving it after 5 quarts... (just around the block) and it was low.

Does anyone know what the total capacity of the system is and where it is stored (ie how much might have been left in the cooler, lines, and TC)?

I don't want to over fill it but I don't want to run low...

Thanks,

Ira

Just keep checking and adding till you reach the correct level. Don't worry about over filling too much - now that you have a drain plug you can drain a little out if need be;)

I forget how many I used??? So I just added till it read on the stick started up put in R then D then N and cycled it a few times then checked in N added till it just touched the tip of the stick. Drive it around to get hot and then check and adjust as required.

Each time you change the fluid it will take more or less than the previous time. Depends on how long you let it drain, did you crack the VB bolts etc.

You'll be fine.

I know it is a stupid question...

But this is the first major thing I have done on my truck and I just don't want to screw it up.

:)

Thanks for the reply,

I just did this a month ago so my feeble mind should be able to recall... ... ... I believe the stock pan holds 5 quarts and the DD pan hold 4 additional so do the math from there :D

Have fun, the DD pan has been a fabulous add-on for me in the 110 degree temps were having here in Vegas now.

Is your Trany temp guage in the pan?

Do you mind me asking what your temp runs in that 110 deg heat?

Do you tow or have a load of any kind? I am dreading the enevitable ATS or DTT trany upgrade as I will have 16K pounds total when I am towing...

Not sure how this trany will hold up to that.

A dry transmission takes 32 pints, 4 gals + 1/2 quart. The double deep takes and additional gallon as already stated. FWIW, I have 5 1/2 gals in the whole system.

Iwiney - I'm using the dipstick probe from Geno's right now (didn't have the Mag pan at the time I installed my temp gauge). My temps (in this heat) run around 155-160 unless I'm around town then I see them as high as 175.

I'm running the DD True Torque Box set to maximum setting (3 I believe) and I tow almost every weekend. For example: This past weekend I towed my 3,000lb+ boat 300 miles and the weekend before that I towed my toyhauler 600 miles up and down I-15, the weekend before that I put 200+ miles on the toyhauler... ... ... . All in 100+ degree temps, 20+lbs of boost and 70+MPH :D :D :D :D :D .

Last time I pulled up to the scale at the Flyin J my trailer weighed between 11-12k (over 18k gross). I absolutely hate the stock transmission but I don't have the coin in pocket right now for the final solution. My interim work-around is to be as easy as possible on the transmission until the TC goes into lockup; then keep it running locked up as much time as possible i. e. 45mph and under I lockout of OD. Big hills I get a run for and that seems to minimize the temp rising as it stays in lockup much longer.

I've had a few people tell me they've had way more HP and miles on a 47RE than most people here would say is possible; they attribute it to how I'm driving my trans now. Like I said, there's no comparison between the stock and aftermarket trannies however, not all of us have the money to go out and get one on a whim.

Thanks so much for all your inputs.

Rich, That is great to know. There was a lot of sludge in the bottom of the stock pan when I took it out. I was worried I cooked it going over the grape vine with the camper Memorial day weekend BDD. (BDD == Before DD pan!) The camper loaded is about 10K total truck weight... But the fluid looked ok... So? We will see. Now that I have the guage I want to see what it runs before I shell out the coin for the new trany. I too drive mine easy. I have never really put my foot in it until the TC locks up...

I did get a bit smart and measured the amount of fluid I took out. Filled a 1gallon jug 1. 5 times. Plus I had fluid all over the drive way as one can imagine... This is right in the ball park of what you are all saying.

Sorry about the stupid post but I have been holding off major modifications and now I am diving in as we have our camper and trailer we will be taking into the Serrias this summer... I don't want to be broke down.

Thanks so much again,
