Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 1999 vs. 2002

I currently own a 1999 2500 4X4 QC Auto. I'm looking at getting the 2002 in Feb. I'm looking for opinions or data regarding the differences between the two model years.

Other than the obvious differences related to the HO vs non HO versions, and rear disc brakes on the later trucks, I seriously doubt any substantial differences - just lots of smaller less significant ones.



Put another way, model for model, everything else being equal, probably not worth the $$$ to make the change... NOW, lotsa miles and wear and tear, as well as upgrading in engine and drivetrain, that's another matter...

THE 2002 RAM TRUCK ARE A GREAT LEAP FORWARD IN THE RIDE AND DURABLE OF THE 2500 RAM TRUCKS. THE FOLD UP MIRRORS ARE GREAT FOR TOWING. I THANK THE transmission SHIFT SMOOTHER

AND THOSE DISK BRAKES ARE A MUST HAVE(THEY WILL STOP YOU ON A DIME AND GIVE YOU NINE CENT CHANGE).

WELL, this thread WAS posted twice - I responded to the other one, and apparently THAT one wuz deleted, so I'll try again...



OTHER than the obvious differences in HO vs non-HO trucks and other drivetrain differences - disc brakes on the '02's are probably the biggest difference. Put another way, all things being equal, put a '99 next to an '02, and the biggest difference would be the $$$$...



NOW, lotsa miles and unusual wear and tear might make the switch worthwhile - but you might be better off putting out some extra $$$ and going to an '03, unless you just prefer the '02 (like *I* do!)...

i have played with both and...

i have a '99 and my brother has a 2002, esentially the same truck (quad cab, short bed, etc) but his is much more refined and a little more civilized to drive. the 2002 brakes are SWEET they work much better than my 99, his steering and front end feel are also a little better i think. a few less squeaks and rattles as well too. don't get me wrong, i like my truck alot, but his is just a little better. however i do like my fuel filter better with the easy access test ports and such, he also doesn't have the rear wheel well plastic(springs and other stuff shows). his radio controls on the steering wheel are cool to.

All differences between a '99 and '02 should favor the '02 with the exception of fuel mileage and the elimination of the CAD on the front axle. Some even think eliminating the CAD is a plus but it does hurt fuel economy and increases rotating parts. The 2003's also deleted the CAD. I think that you will find the 2002 much improved over the '99, so if you don't want a2003, go for it!

If the CAD deleted is a plus for you becareful, not all the 2002's are CAD delete. It seems that Jan. of 02 and later was when DC dropped the CAD system.



Just another positive note on the disc brakes - THEY ARE GREAT !!!

When you folks are talking about less mileage. How much are talking? Whats the avg mi/gallon for a 2. . 2?

I'M GETTING 18 TO 21 MILES TO A GAL. . SOME TIME 23 TO 24 ON LONG TRIP. .



I DRIVE MY TRUCK ABOUT A 130 MILE A DAY TO WORK AND BACK

I CAN GO ALL WEEK ON A TANK AND A 1/4 OF FUEL, AND I DRIVE AROUND 65 TO 70 MPH.

I had a '99 QC SB 4x4 Auto and traded it on an '02 QC LB 4x4 ETH/DEE this September. The '02 is a better truck in almost every way.



GOOD POINTS:



Rides a lot smoother

Aluminum wheels w/larger tires

4 Wheel disks!

Better paint quality

Better headlights

Relays for everything

Easier fuel filter changes

Better lift pumps? (Maybe... please?)



BAD POINTS:



No vanity mirrors in sun visors

No tailgate trim

No bed-side molding

No rear-wheel liners

Far less under-hood insulation/sound-deadener



My fuel mileage is almost the same on the new truck with only 5200 miles vs. the old truck with 38,000. I don't know if it's a by-product of the front axle CAD delete, but the new truck is also much easier to put in 4x4, both stopped and moving. The trip computer on both trucks are off, the new truck by 1. 5mpg under actual and the old truck by 1. 9mpg over actual.



I'm really happy with the new truck, like it better than the old one. Don't get me wrong, if they weren't offering 0. 0% financing for 60 months, I would have spent $3000 on the '99 (transmission and mild engine BOMBS) and been almost as content as I am now. Notice I said "almost"? I think that's mostly because there's nothing like a new vehicle to make someone happier

I just did the same thing only with a 98.



Different block to prevent (small) problem with cracks.

Injecton pump has gotten better over the years.



Everything else everyone else has covered, but I also want to say "the brakes are the worth the ungrade alone"
