Well, now that I have all three, I can tell you what I like about each of them:

1st Gen: Nastalgic looks, Rides like a truck (There are some places on paved road I'm bouncing like crazy), seats are like sitting on the living room couch, rustic controls, easiest shock change out I ever saw. Easiest one to install 900 watt amp, CD changer, 4- 50oz 6X9 three-way speakers and 12" sub woofer.

2nd Gen: Has that great Peterbilt look, firm, but good ride, seats are real comfortable, noisiest (good thing) one of all, VP-44 (not), best ride (IMHO).

3rd Gen: Has that evolved big truck look, Most refined fit and finish of all the Gens, has enough power to not have to BOMB (but why wouldn't you?), ride would be better if tires were't low profile 70s (IMHO).

They're all great turcks and fun to drive.

I have a 2nd and just bought a 3rd. I think the 3rd was built on another planet. It is quiet, doesn't steer like a boat, has great fit and finish. The 2nd was much more truck like and louder. I had a little trouble with the 2nd. Injector pump and now drive shaft at 90k.

We use our 3rd Gen as the family car

I pull our tractor w/ the 3rd gen sometimes, but with the 4-doors, use it mostly like a passenger car. It's my wifes daily driver (60 miles/day). Nice ride.

I pull our 17K lb 5th wheel with the 2nd gen 3500 and is pretty much my hot rod playtoy.

I've only had the 1st Gen about 6-weeks and have devoted most of my efforts changing fluids and doing preventative maint on it. it had surface rust on the roof and the paint peeled off the hood. Went to Advanced Auto Parts, got some rattle can touch up paint, sanded it down and sprayed it. Perfectly matched the stock green. I need to replace the clutch before doing any more the truning up the pump and advancing the timing.

All is good and fun

1st gen 2500 reg cab lifted are sweet looking hunting trucks. The thing is a more nostalgic forever truck. JC whitney makes many replacement parts for it. Shares a lot of style and design of trucks 30 years older to it. 2nd gen had some refinements, still a truck that will be roadworthy for a long time. Still pretty mechanically simple trucks (12v atleast)... 3rd gens are 10 years drive me and throw me away trucks. I don't really even consider them a truck, more of a quiet passenger vehicle. We will see in a few years how much they are costing to keep running with its more complicated systems it has. .
