Well, only 1820 miles into my new '06 and I had the "Check Engine" light come on. I really don't want to take it in to the dealer for this, so it there anyway to find out the code/issue without taking it to the dealer? I tried the switching of the ignition key 3 times but it didn't work. The truck is running fine and nothing seems to be wrong, so should I just give it a few days see if it goes away?

Thanks for the help. :)

Joe

Mine threw a code and the key trick worked. I knew the code was thrown by my EX- Quadzilla box. I would take it to the dealer, and find out what it is. Just to be on the safe side.

The same thing happened to me. It happened when my mileage is about 4,000 miles. I brought it to the dealer. They fix the CEL light but could not provide me with explanation why it was on. Three days later all my dome lights will not come on when you open the door and the roller switch (located on left driver side) will not turn on all dome light.

The service adviser and techs at the dealership are clue less. I'm taking my truck to another dealership when I get a chance. Right now the CEL is off, I can live without the dome light convenience for now... ... The truck run fine. .

Thats why I HATE the dealers. They are clueless and the local Power Dodge here has nothing but idiots working there. I really want to find out what the code is that it threw so I have some kind of back-up or ammunition against the service techs if they try to blow some false story past me.

I will try the key trick again this morning and see if I can get the code(s) to come up. Is there any special trick to getting this key thing to work? Do you have to cycle the key all the way to lock, off and then on 3 times or just off, on, off, on, etc. ? Do you leave the key on or off at the last cycle?

Thanks, Joe

The key trick works on the 06's you just have to do it rather quickly. If it didn't store it then it will just say done and then go back to displaying the odo numbers. Once you get the code you can look it up in the tech section or someone here will know what it is.

Got it to work BUT, the darn code didn't stay displayed. I think I turned the key off on the last cycle and the code went away. I cannot get it to come back up as everytime I cycle the key 3 times now, it just displays dashed lines where the odo is. Should it continue to come up after the 3 cycles or does it only do it once?

I want to say that I got a good look at what the code was and I swear I thought I saw a P1054 but I can't be certain. Will try again at lunch to see if I can get the code to come back up. If that is the code anyone know what that one is?

Thanks, Joe

Thanks staarma, I'll have to double check that code to see if that in fact was the one that came up since I screwed up the first time and couldn't get it to come back up. I assume the "TP" sensor is for the throttle position sensor? Interesting, thought the manual trucks didn't have one and they were only in the autos.

Good to hear that info on that code if that is the one. Where can I find this tech section you spoke of to find the list of codes? I found a list in the "No engine/trans" forums but I think it was for an '04 and there seemed to be some missing from that list not to mention I could not find th code that my truck has thrown at me.

Will disconnecting the battery do anything? I haven't read too many threads on here that have seen luck with doing that to clear a code.....

My truck is going in tomorrow AM also. CEL on, truck runs fine.

Can't seem to get the 3 key on/off think to display the codes.

I'll try again.

My truck has about 2900 miles on it.

Yeah, for some reason the key trick only worked once. All I get now after trying to verify that the code I saw was P1054, is a bunch of dashed lines where the odometer numbers are. Does anyone know if this is typical of the key code trick??

Joe

No, never tapped into any of the connectors under the hood. Truck is bone stock, only 1830 miles.

The only aftermarket stuff on it right now is the AFE Stg. 2 intake and Mag-Hytec covers front and rear. Nothing else is going to be installed for quite sometime, probably when the warranty runs out after 100K. :)

The CEL was still on during my lunch break today when I tried to get the code to come back up to verify it, so I guess I will be attempting a dealer visit sometime soon. Hopefully it is a quick in and out... ...

Yeah, good luck with the dealer. Some are cool and some not. Hopefully it isn't a gremlin and just a one time deal. Let us know. Would be interested to see if that actually was the code.

I can only comment on my 04. 5 but the 3 key cycle only works for me if I leave it off for several seconds then do the cycle and leave it on. If I try to do the 3 cycle too soon after I turn it to off I get dashed lines. However, if I get the codes and then cycle to off and back to on ONE time (pretty quickly)the codes will show a second time.

Thanks RMalone, I will give that a try to see if I can get the code to come back up.

Gonna take it into the dealer tomorrow morning since I was able to come up with a few hours off work for this. Will report my findings in the morning... ...

Well guys, got it taken care of this morning. It was code P0514, the battery temp performance code. After reading another post this morning I guess this is a more common code that is thrown here and there. Good to know it was nothing major and not even the one that I originally thought it was. I still can't figure out why the display would not bring the code back up after I breifly saw it yesterday doing the 3 cycle key trick. Everytime after that I would get the dashed lines and thats it. Tried RMalone's trick by waiting before I try it again and nothing seemed to work. Oh well, not going to worry about it now.

One thing on the dealership I went to. They fired the previous Service Manager :D Oo. who was the one guy I hated the most as here always gave me terrible service and the new guy was very attentative and helpful. Sounds like the local dealer is stepping up due to some bad surveys, finally a dealer I can trust.

I know you are on the other side of the valley, but Frahm Dodge in Norco has the best tech's in SO CAL if you need to have a dealer look at it. I recommend you get an appointment and explain the distance you have to travel because Norco is a horse community and there are a lot of CTD's that they service.

I'll have to look into that in the future if this or anything else happens again. Thanks for the info, RVTRKN. :)
