Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Low mileage...

I just got installed both boost and EGT (pre turbo) gauges.

Here is what I experienced with my first trip towing a 30' 5er.

Level ground at 70 mph, about 800 temp and around 10-12 boost.

Soon as I started up a hill the boost instantly goes to about 19 and the temp goes to about 1100.

If the hill was steep enough to make me down shift (6 to 5), the boost stays at 19 but the temp goes up to about 1250-1300.

Are these what I should expect?

Thanks

Bob

Kinda funny how we never worried about the temps, ect. until we put gages on our vehicles. I drove MANY old VWs... wide open, on the hottest of days and never worried about them. All you had was two idiot lights... one for the generator and one for the oil pressure that the factory said could come on at a hot idle as long as it went off when the RPM rose. It went on @ 2 psi!!! As soon as I put an oil temp guage on my VW and saw 240 to 260 oil temp, I took it easier on the poor thing.

Hi Bob. The temps you are seeing are quite normal. The problem is that you are limited to the stock 20 PSI of boost, thus your engine will run fairly hot. If you were to install a box (EZ and such), that would allow your boost to run higher and will cool off your engine considerably. You will also see a nice performance gain. The Diesel Dynamics True Torque Power Module (version of the edge EZ) is probably the best towing box on the market-- solid torque increases, NO egt increase, and will actually cool off a stock engine. It also doesn't smoke.

For the record, your Cummins can cruise forever at 1200° pre turbo, so you are not in any danger.

Turbo

My stock turbo went out, so when I replaced it, I got Piers. I am looking at an EZ or something next.

But reliability and Fuel Mileage are my biggest concerns.

I use my truck as a tool, not a toy, and at 10-15 k miles a month, it must be reliable and get good mileage. I have gotten over 200k on stock clutch and still have stock brakes. I feel My clutch should have lasted longer, but it was the springs that failed not the lining. It was still holding fine when I replaced it.
