1st gen Dana rearend identification help

Hey I just spit out a pinion seal on my new to me 1991 (non intercooled) d250 or d350 not sure (debadged as purchased). I want to purchase a bearing and seal kit, spool, and if not ok a gear set. my only issue is i am unsure if it has the 70, 70 hd, or a dana 80 rear. can anyone tell me how to tell which i have? i checked the webbing and it didnt say which dana it i have.

There may be a metal tag with the "bill of materials" numbers on it. If not, you can get the numbers off the right gear and carrier to make positive ID on what parts you need. See the following charts:

Pretty good bet its a 70 HD, thats was pretty much the standard. You should be able to get a pinion seal either the 70 or 70 HD and they should be the same. IIRC, the HD had different axle bearings only.

im gonna go with new gears cuz the speedo stopped working at 293k and i managed to drive the truck home but it was shaking real bad the whole way where i had spit all the fluid out the pinion.

hey I tried reider racing and randys ring and pinion. is there any other places I cant find a spool for this truck. I didnt realize randy update their site and axle ID was simple as the only dana bigger than a 60 on their site for a 91 ram was the "dana 70-u" which uses small pinion bearings than standard 70 and 32 spline axles. I dont want to shell out for a detriot (500-600) or arb (800-900 w/out compressor) but i dont want the risk of welded up spider gears dispite being successful with it in the past.

A spool is a no-no for thr street, itcreates sever drivability probllems not to mention tire wear for street use.

The factory limited slip unit uses clutch plates that can be stacked to talor the slip to your situation and can infact be stacked to create a unit with significant anti spin characteristics.

Randys sells a book that tells you how to stack the plates to suit yor needs.

It mite be worth a try!

You are correct it is a D70-U.

Call these guys. I recently built a D80 rear axle. All the parts that the sales rep for Randy's Ring and pinion told me were discontinued, they had sitting on the shelf... for about 1/2 the price of Randy's.
