1st gen dump truck

In my quest for a good used dump truck,I have found nothing but old junk or overpriced newer models. So the gears in my mind begin to turn... . I got a good 1 ton truck,why not take the factory bed off and put a 2/3 yard tipper in place of it. Then I start asking "experts" (read: salesmen) about the idea I have and the costs involved. So far I have found very few positive responses for doing such a job. The most common problem I hear is a weak frame. Then followed by 'How many Dodge wreckers do you see on the road?'Is there any truth to these claims?Is it feasable to put a dump box on a 1st gen truck?

hell,,,,,,,,,,,,,did that to a 1st gen 159'' wb w/ a 12' fb several years ago. we did fishplate frame tween cab and axle. hauled and dumped much weight w/ no probs. weak frame my ass. beefier than the fords were

Although I havent seen any 1st gens with a dump, there probably a or so dozen 2nd gen. trucks with a Contractor dump boxes on them. Have you considered a dump trailer, bumper or gooseneck?

bmoeller-I actually have a 7x 14 bumper pull dump trailer that I built less than 2 years ago. Personally,I don't care for dump trailers now that I have owned and used one. In reality I think I will put it up for sale in the very near future. This is the reason I am thinking about a 1st gen dump truck.

Firend of mine has a 72 F350 with a 12 ft dump. Blown 360; needs a Cummins. Only problems he had with it was broken driveshaft yokes when he loaded it FULL with gravel and tried to start out with a regular 1st gear (no granny) and 3. 54s. ANother problem is his dad bought it in 73 or 74, and has since passed on, and my friend is VERY sentimental; probably couldnt buy it for ht eprice of a new one.





I have seen a few 1st gen dump trucks, normally only 8' though. Not seen too many wreckers, but it could be the same reason you hardly EVER see Cummins powered company trucks- engine is too much for some mush brained punk to be operating. PSDs, Dmaxs, V8 gassers wont break a Ujoint or rip out a transmission like the Cummins Super B.

Been Away for a While...

Hey guys, I have a 1-ton 4X4 dump a 92 to be exact, and it works fine. A huge money maker for me. It is a special truck too, it came from the factory rated above 10,000 gvw, cool It has a Thiele contractors dump on it. I would seriously recommend buying an aluminum body, saves weight, no paint/rust, costs more, but can be transfered to other trucks if you get a new one.

The main reason most tow trucks are Chevy 1 ton's with small gas motors is cost. They are cheep in comparison to a cummins powered dodge. Usually the driver pays for fuel so the companies don't care about fuel consumption. Also most of the tow companies around here buy the extended warranty and lease them... . When they are out of warranty they get new ones. Now some have started to use UD or Isuzu cab fronts but the cost is considerably more and it takes allot of miles for the payback on the increased cost iof the truck... .

The quick and dirty could be a dump insert. One of the ones that slide into the bed and have electric over hyd. lifts.

My dodge loved the ez dumper hauled it just fine, sagged a bit before the timbrens but that was because the rear springs where shot! had a 84 with a 360gasser and a 12' dumploaded that to 15k more than enough times to go through 4 727 torqueflight auto's they didn't like the weight much? can't quite understand why. :-laf auto's any way Dodge is plenty ruged enough to carry the freight, just watch who you let drive the loaded cummins unless you want a new 5spd any ways!!
