My dealership did my first oil change, now its my turn.

My question is what size hex wrench do I need and also what is the ft. pounds I need to tighten?

You don't need a hex wrench at all!

The pan plug has a 3/8" square recess—if it fits in a socket it will fit the pan plug.

My 2000 service manual calls for 44 foot-pounds but I've heard rumors that 40 foot-pounds is better.

I changed my drain plug to that heavy duty magnetic Superplug (I recommend it) and I know that plug is 1 1/8. The stock unit uses the 3/8 drive and the torque was 40lbs.

Don't torque to 44 ft/lbs! I didn't think I would get mine off without ripping the pan apart on my last oil change. I went by feel on my first change, then I torqued it to 44 on the second change. I should have left the torque wrench in the tool box. I really thought I was going to wreck something breaking that sucker loose. I'd say 35-40 ft/lbs max.

By the way, there are no dumb questions here. #ad

We had a discussion a few months ago about torquing the oil pan drain plug. Several others and I commented we never torque the oil pan plug. Just screw down and snug it. Never had any problems. Even 40 lbs sounds high.

Keep on Ram'n

I've always torqued every drain plug on every rig by feel only with zero problems. After reading about torqueing them here I checked mine after tightening by feel, 28 ft/lbs on the torque wrench. I will continue just going by feel.

That "superplug" looks great! Is it similar to the stock plug in that it sits nearly flush to the pan and accepts a 3/8" male bar to loosen?
