Well guys,

Since I have 5,500 on the odometer, I figured I had better do an oil change. So I head to Cummins, picked up all the necessary goodies and head home to start the fun. #ad

So I crank up the Metallica on my shop radio AND my truck stereo and get to work. I drained the oil with no problem, as I was expecting an over-torqued drain plug. Piece of cake. Then I get to the oil filter...

I expected it to be tight from the factory, but this thing must have been put on there with an air gun with a filter attachment, and toqued to AT LEAST half a million ft-lb!!! For 30 minutes, I tried to muscle that ******* offa there, but to no avail. My oil filter wrenches were all too small, so I said "screw this" and decided to get out the big guns. So I march into my shop mumbling various things, most of which included "DC" and "%$#* @#%$!!!" #ad
I grab my 18" pipe wrench, and head back out to the garage. I open the thing up wide, then tighten the jaws on the filter, and PRESTO, it came off as smooth as can be...

So I put on a new filter, filled with the finest Cummins Premium Blue 15W-40, then I filled the crankcase with 10 quarts of too good stuff. Checked the dipstick, and the oil level was right in the middle of the "SAFE" mark. #ad

So other than the oil filter that was put on by Arnold Shwarzenegger, the oil change went great! #ad

How did you get that 18" pipe wrench in amongst all those parts?

After reading about the trouble with the factory installed filter, I took mine to a trusted friend who happens to own an oil change business and assisted him while he took it off. It was tough, but he had done it before.

That's the easy way to get the filter off!!!!

The second time I did the oil change myself (along with 23 year old son with a strong grip and hands smaller than mine). I have a good supply of Fleetguard filters and Shell Rotella T.

I now use reference marks on the filter and base also.

Thanks to the TDR!!!!

Bennett,

I took the hose off the turbo, which made it easier to reach. I put the wrench on the top of the filter, with the handle parallel with the engine and going towards the back of the truck. Had to do it 1/8 of a turn at a time! #ad

Evan, after all that, I hope that 18" plumbers dream didn't contact the hot stud on the alternator! Doh! #ad

*LOL* Rob...

I took special care to make sure it was on there, and not in the bottom of the drain bucket... Just be glad I found yours in the pan... WOulda looked kinda funny going to the DC service dept saying you got an oil leak, and then having them tell you that there was no plug gasket... *LOL* #ad

I have a 2001 and had the same wonderful experience changing the filter at the first oil change. It must some crazy stunt by Chrysler to skew the federally funded study to find out whether more new Dodge owners pull hernias than new Ford owners. By the way I guess everyone out there knows why they ended up named Ford - because it rhymed with Bored.

According to another thread, it's Cummins that puts that first filter on. So Bubba works for Cummins, not Dodge. It sounds like they're aware of it and trying to correct it.

My first oil change went smoothly. I had almost no trouble with the filter.
I installed the Fleetgaurd Stratrapore filter (3894 I think)- and didn't torque it that tight! When it came time to change that sucker I was cussing a blue streak for 40 minutes. Finially took the coolant over-flow tank out and was able to get a bite on the filter and some leverage on the wrench. What a bear.
There is a thread out about a response from Cummins. Something about a revision on the seal material on the filter.

Hope the next one is easier.

Same problem here with my 2001. Was aware this was going to happen from comments on the web. Tried twice to get the filter off and finally took it to the local dealership with my oil and filter. Cost $23 to have them change the oil - well worth it!! Watched through the window as the mechanic grunted and cursed.

Another Shadetree Tip

Get a big OLD screwdriver that you don't count on much for screwing anymore and hammer it through the filter. Makes a nice handle, and, of course you don't care about saving the old filter unless you've got some kind of a pack-rat neurosis. Don't forget to not hammer into the alternator #ad
. This tek-neek is about the ONLY way to remove the filter on a 911 Porsche, unless you drop the engine, which, BTW, they do just to adjust the valves on a 911. Takes about 30 minutes, so they say. Try that with the Cummins #ad

Evan, what's with the Premium Blue? I saw that was pretty low on the Four Ball Wear Test, which, of course was done by an independent laboratory. And didn't General P advise us a few years ago to wait til after 10k miles for the synthetic stuff? I need to know in case I ever get a new truck, which I might if they ever go back to 12 valves.

Premium Blue is the regular 15W40 oil. Premium Blue 2000 is the synthtic stuff. I used PB on my 98. 5 with no problems at all... Didn't burn a drop.
