Oil change - Puyallup/Wenatchee WA

6 Speed Failures????

I just got finished with my first oil change on the 600. Has 3500 miles and I used the Fleetguard filter and Rotella 15W-40 dino. Filled new filter 3/4 full with new oil. After filling the empty oil containers up with the used oil, it seems that there was only 2. 5 gallons in there. I know that all of the old oil was not drained so that may compensate for some of it. What have you other guys noticed on your first oil changes? Does this sound consistant? BTW, changed the oil hot, let it drain for 30 minutes or so. Removed the filter from the bottom and not one drop was spilled:D , I rather proud of myself for that one. Torqued the new heavy duty Geno's oil plug to 38 ft. lbs and tightened the filter 1/4 turn past hand tight. One of the easiest oil changes I have ever done. The most novice of backyard mechanics can do it. Very simple:) Experiences from others on the oil level is appreciated. Thanks.

Pretty much the same experience. I've never pulled out a full 3 gallons of oil. But as long as the dipstick shows it to be full I don't worry about it. For what it's worth, the level on my dipstick has been right on the full mark every time I've checked it, and after oil changes. I've got about 24,000 miles on it now. I used to do the 30 minute drain, but for the most part all the oil has drained out in 15 minutes and I was worried about cockroaches climbing up in there. :D

Only thing that seems different is the 1/4 turn on the filter. I remember reading that you should turn it 3/4 turn after it is hand tight. In fact, I'm pretty sure I got it right here on the TDR:

So far I haven't seen any oil leaking from the top or bottom of the engine. First vehicle I have ever had that didn't lead so much as a drop.

My 600 manuel states 12 quarts capacity. Also, I have read that you go 3/4 after the rubber seal makes contact with the oil filter housing, so I can still tighten with my hand once the rubber seal makes contact, maybe 1/2 turn give or take, then I just went another 1/4 with the socket. Should be close to the 3/4 turn after it's all said and done. My dipstick is reading a little above the full mark and 12 quarts is what I put so... I guess this is OK. BTW, just got back from a 10 minute drive, and no leaks so I'm :D

I've done the same thing on my used vehicles. But I have also been warned that anything over full can have bad consequences. I've always heard that a little low is better than a little high.

Apparently Cummins fired the Gorilla in charge of new oil filter tightening at the engine assembly plant. :D

Each of my first oil filter removals on three brand new Dodge/CTD trucks were pure hell in the removal department.

I was prepared for the first filter to take all I had to get it off and it came off without a problem. Very relieved.

I believe the filter holds more then a quart and you can put more then a gallon in the containers. 3/4 turn is what I read and did.

It says 3/4 turn AFTER the seal contacts the oil filter housing, not 3/4 AFTER hand tightening. I would think that 3/4 turn AFTER hand tightening would be a little too much. Not necessary IMO.

LOL! Amen brother!! I was very ****** with the filter on my '02. When I told the guy at the parts store what I was doing, he said "there's no filter made that can bend a screwdriver. " I said, "Yeah, I must be a f***ing liar then, huh?" I've never seen a filter tightened so.

my first oil change broke genos 6 in one wrench (plastic) called and getting the metal one. wanted JHs turned filter wrench but genos says it was poor quality and they quit carring it? except for the muscle man that put the filter on everything else went well. :p

over all very happy with the truck, air bags on rear next then 2"front lift.

I've been procrastinating (been busy) when it came to renewing my subscription, but this post made me get the ole credit card out again!

I've sold over 300 of these sockets without a single complaint. There are NO quality problems.

In the process of negotiating a price for Genos, I told Robin I could remove the engraving (additional milling operation) to get the price where she wanted it. She agreed to that saying that TDR logo items didn't sell that well anyway.

When she received her shipment, she threw a fit because there was no engraving!

I forwarded the email where I stated that there would NO engraving. She apologized for her oversight and told me to go ahead with the rest of the order, which I decided against doing.

There are no quality problems, only communication errors!

I'll be adding the engraving back and selling one at a time again, it's more time consuming to handle the shipping, but less aggravating overall.

That's really lame Genos said that, there have been countless posts about the plastic 6 in one they sell breaking and nothing but praise for the one JHardwick produced. Genos has lost at least one customer. Seeing this thread reminded me that I wanted to order one of the turned sockets, I looked in the TDR basement enterprises but did not see it listed, can you provide a link for how to get one direct?

I think an appolgy from genos to jay should be forthcomming. I will order a wrench from jay asap. lots of orders come from tdr members and to slam jay was unjustified. Will report on jays quality both to tdr and genos when wrench gets here.

I don't need or want an apology. Bashing the quality of my product was pretty lame, but I had a feeling of who I was dealing with early on. Ever meet someone who is NEVER wrong?

This socket is pretty pricey compared to how often it will be used, I'll admit. But it is also custom made from billet aluminum and will no doubt be handed down from generation to generation ... ... ... ..... it does NOT lack quality!

I've been a machinist all of my adult life, and dealt with engineers who couldn't engineer their way out of a bag. I'm no engineer, but this tool fits a ratchet well, fits the filter well and can't be broken. Besides, engraving or no, it's a sexy piece.

Jeff, I ordered one of your sockets from Geno’s, they sent it to me for free (I had a large order of other goodies), the sales person commented that the sockets were not engraved, and could have dings on them. To me I could care less what they look like, I just know that it is a quality product that will last. It is a very nice tool; hopefully you continue to sell it through another vendor, on your own. Maybe Geno’s will figure out what they lost, and work some deal out with you, they can not expect a perfectly machined chunk of aluminum, polished and engraved to retail for $32. 50, that is nuts. Hell I think it was nuts that they were retailing them for $32. 50 without the engraving or polishing, that is still REALLY cheap for the amount of work it takes to machine the socket.

I spent two years in college at a machine shop and understand what it takes to make that tool. It is the deal of a lifetime for $32. 50 retail, you should be able to sell them on your own, via eBay, and word of mouth, good luck with them.
