I just did my first oil change. (3000 MILES) I have gone 200 miles and checked it and it was down two qts and the oil looks dark not new. Could anyone tell me if this is normal? I put in 10 qts of Shell Rotella T 15-40. I also checked and cleaned the blow by tube and tank, Dident see a lot of oil in this but it was wet with oil. Steven:rolleyes:

Our Cummins takes 1 qt in the filter prior to installation, and 10 quarts in the crankcase. The oil getting darker faster than a gas motor is pretty normal.

I would immediately check for leaks around the drain plug and oil filter. If you have no leaks, you probably miss-counted on the oil or something. This, in conjunction with an oil change, can not be much other than operator error! (Sorry).

SJokinen, Have you broke that baby in yet and seated the rings? Even if you haven't, you'd be seeing some smoke if you were burning oil. Rob has a good point about putting some in the filter. That may be one of your quarts. Also, are you checking it hot? That will take some. It needs to be level. At 36K mine is staying full. If you are losing that much, there's gonna be oil in the blow by or going out the exhaust. Add what you need and keep a check on it. Also, take that truck, load it up and put it to work on some long hills. That'll seat everything like it should be seated.
