OK, This is my first diesel.

1993 1 ton, 4wd, positrack rear end, 3:55 gears. 5 speed.

Black. Some rust under cab. Will fix at body shop.

91k orig miles

It has a mechanical fuel pump on the engine side, (You can pump it manually too) and then it has a purge thing.

If I run it out of fuel, is that hard to fix?

Put Rotella, and Wix filter on it. K&N filter will be on it soon.

What kinds of fluid go in the rear, and front differential?

I want to change ALL the gear box fluids. I have no manual.

Any basic instruction for a 1st time owner?

What's "Getrag" mean about the transmission?

Thanx

Nate

First start by reading all of the FAQ's at the top of the 1st gen forum.

It's not hard to get it going if you run it out of fuel, but it is best to not do it.

Getrag is the company that builds these transmissions. I have gotten good service out of mine. I am currently running Mobil1 15w50 filled through the top bolt hole in the PTO cover. It shifts a little stiff when cold, but it is much quiter.

After you get all your PM done, get some gauges before you do anything else.

Hi Nate,

Welcome to the TDR! I've never run out of fuel with mine, so I can't really answer that question. Nor do I have the Getrag, but I believe it is the company name. Most guys overfill their Getrag by one quart to extend the life of the transmission.

As for the front/rear diff fluids, check the attached link to an earlier thread on this very subject, along with capacities.

The best advice I can give you is what you are already doing. Change all of the fluids, grease all of the zirk fittings, and lubricate anything that moves. Then just enjoy your truck!!:)

You'r in for some fun! Put on your learning cap and take your time. You'll see us with 300-400 hp but it don't happen overnight. You will want to perform some of the basic service procedures (PM) and move into some minor repairs. This is where you'll really begin to learn a thing or 2 about how the truck and it's engine are "put together":)

Once you get some of the PM and minor repairs worked out (bugs) you will then begin to tinker/tweak the HP output of this rig. Again, start slow and do your homework (research) or you'll be walk'n to your next appointment. These engine are 160 HP from factory... ..... but by nature they are a 300 HP animal by design... . easy!

Get your'self the factory service publication and you have already made the best investment money can buy... ... ... . your membership to TDR!!!!!!Oo.

Welcome partner. We are here 24/7, so ask away, and do your homework!!!

Welcome, if your pickup runs out of fuel all you need to do is start opening injector lines from the back forward and it should start up pretty easy. Welcome to the forum you need to get some pictures for us.

well first things first... WELCOME... . second don't run you truck out of fuel..... it will jsut cause you a huge head ache... . and could casue the engen to become damaged, and the fuel pump

i've heard just regular gear oil for the diffs. accourding to a post some where... . 75w90 not towing and 85w140 for towing for the rear axle. Make sure that the engen oil is rated for diesels with turbos.

well there is a list of lots of things for first time owners... . get gauges for you EGT's (for the turbo), before you shut off the truck give the turbo a min. or 2 to cool down. be nice to engen... . no need to drag-race on the streets.

wait for the engen oil to go up to normal rang before driving... this will allow the engen to warm up

getrag... . it;s a type of transmission... ... the trans. cost me 5k$ i put 1k into the getrag then gave up on it and just converted over to the NV4500. (4K$) if the getrag is working fine now... just over fill the getrag by a quart of oil. This can be done at the tower (hopefully some one else will tell you more bout that. . i never did it)

This is absolutely, positively the best first thing to do (says the newbie who joined yesterday and still has a lot more to read). The second thing to do is read the Best tip for New 1st Gen owners thread. Then keep reading and asking questions. - g^2, who has spent _way_ too much time perusing TDR today. . .

Nate,

First off, let me say I am SOOOO dang jealous- that sounds like EXACTLY what I'd like to have, though the 2wd is good for MPGs.

Anyway, I started a thread about K&N air filters a few months ago- something to the effect of K&N "filter", as in I used that term loosely. REad that thread, esp if you live in a dusty area or drive a bunch of gravel roads. THis goes for ANYTHING- but do your homework and then make the best choice for yourself.

Get gauges- Pyrometer with probe in the manifold- it is next to useless in the exhaust stream down from the turbo. I have seen a 550 deg difference in temps from post to pre turbo. And get AT LEAST a 40psi boost gauge; 50-60 psi if you plan to get in on the race to 500rwhp w/ a VE (Sorry, wildman wilson and RonA, your pickups dont count). I have pegged my 40psi gague with a 12cm housing on my PDR HX35, stock flow EDMs, and some pump tweaks.

Limited Slip (posi trac, Trac-loc, etc)- Add friction modifier to the thing when you change it. And, use synthetic fluid if your pinion seal isnt leaking.

Check your rear brakes, repack/ replace bearings as needed. Flush old brake fluid out once a year.

Check u-joints in driveshafts and front axle.

Check TDR forums often and contribute as you learn. :D

Also, how much fuel does the stock fuel tank hold?

If you don't run it out, and fill it, you just don't know...

And many have said don't run it dry!

Thanks,

Nate

PS Mr. D Puckett, I live on 3 miles of dirt road. It throws cold water on my plans.

What do you recomend?

I also put small quantity of grease on the INSIDE of the intake tube, into the turbo. IF it is getting fine dirt, then there HAS to be a source. Will ANY excess grease harm the turbo?

I learned this method of monitoring the quality of the intake air, for 2 cycle race bikes, many yrs ago.

Nate

Thanks

The stock fuel tank holds 30 gallons.

The LSD axles can use the same gear oil as non-LSD, but you need to add a small bottle of friction modifier. I highly recommend you purchase the Mopar brand from the Dodge dealer. I tried another brand first, and the clutches were still binding in the corners. Added the Mopar additive and the noise was gone.

if you use the amsoil diff oil it has the friction modifiers in it already. I haven't used it but i've heard it's really good. turbodogs when are you moving to Reno? i'll be in anchorage in sep.

NDearyan-

A lot of guys run the aFe Progard 7 air filter. Might do a search in the produact and accessories forum for info. I am also considering a Fleetagard BHAF with an Outerwears prefilter- help extend the useful life of the filter. But that all requires money, and I need to start saving for a pump rebuild.

I am currently running a stock STP air filter (yeah, I know, it's from Auto Zone, but they were the only ones in town who had it for under $35, and it wasnt behind the counter), and lost no peak boost with my set up and topping out at around 35psi. EGTs arent up noticeably- hot vs cool day makes about the same difference. Smoke might have increased a little off the line, but that is probably from other issues I wont get into here.

I think his plans are to head south by the end of August.

I'm going to be really bummed to see my old '92 leaving--we put a lot of miles on that truck, including two trips down the west coast, going through 15 states and 3 Canadian provinces.

TurboDogs, I want to see some pictures of my old truck down there in Reno!! :D
