single wheel to dual wheel conversion

need some info on a gmc 3500hd swap

I'm looking to start a 2. 8L CRD conversion on a Jeep TJ, but need help finding a motor and extra info. After searching around on the forum, I know that a couple of theses conversions have been done before. Has anybody done this conversion recently? How difficult is the wiring in such a swap into a TJ? Other than sourcing a used motor, does Chrysler or anybody else sell the motor as a crate motor? What would a crate motor cost?

I know that Chrysler was at one time thinking about offering a crate motor (non egr) swap package for TJs and other Jeeps, but the last I heard that package was being scrapped for now. Does anybody else offer a swap package for this conversion?

Y'alls help in getting me on the right track would be appreciated!

I have one in my Liberty and love it. I would love it even more in a Wrangler! (WITH A MANUAL TRANS!!)

I would look on overseas sites. A crate engine would be EXPENSIVE. You can find used diesels from overseas MUCH cheaper. There are other diesel engines out there too that might be a simpler swap, but the 2. 8 CRD is a sweet runner.

I thought I heard DC had a complete change over for this in the catalog... . I have an early CJ and would love this combo...

I called my local dealer the other day. They informed that the motor was only available now as a long block and not even as a crate motor yet. He also informed that the longblock was around 8k MSRP. Good news though, had him call Chrysler about the TJ conversion kit, and the dealer was informed by Chrysler that it should be available around 2/09 to 3/09. Price isn't set yet, but I would expect it to be 10k plus!

2.8 TVG Diesel? Not the CRD?

The CRD is complicated and rare. Why not an International 2. 8 TVG? It is about $6000 for the engine kit on a pallet. Advance adaptors has an $950 adaptor to an NV4500 5 speed using a GM input shaft.

I'm currently researching using one of these engines in a Dodge PU to replace the old 5. 2/5. 9 (318/360) V8. It comes very complete. Has about 170 hp and about 300 ft/lb and revs to 4000 rpm. Legally, I guess you'd need to use a 2006 and earlier vehicle?

What is the International 2. 8TVG? I have never heard of it.

The CRD is not rare, but is overly complicated. It is used in Wranglers (for export only) and has been in use overseas for years. I would say the wiring to make it all work would be complicated, but the engine itself does not appear to be any more complicated than any other new generation diesel.
