I dont know how, but when I was taking my HX40 off today to do some wastegate adjustments, I only had to remove 2 bolts. . 2 BOLTS! Where are the other 2???!!! My question is what size are the bolts, as I need to get some more, and do I need to use some sort of a thread lock?? Someone please chime in!

Chris, Cummins will have them in stock if you can't find the ones John is talking about, if you have to put it back together like that put them on cross studs and yes use locktite! Shame your not close I have 3 spares... ... . 3... ... . I've never had this issue!

Jim

Make sure you match the bolt strength also. If the bolt says 10. 9 on the head, then make sure you get a 10. 9 or stronger. the higher the number, the stronger the bolt. I always use a 12. 9, it is roughly the same as a grade 8.

I would recomend finding a good hardware store, they are usually better at comming up with hardware then the junk you will find at Homo Depot.

Also, See if you can find Stainless Steel bolts, they will last longer, but are not available at every hardware distributer.

I thought stainless steel did not do well where heat was concerned. Over time it tends to develop fissure cracks I'm pretty sure. I am not a metals expert, but went through that when I changed studs mounting the ATS manifold.

I would stick with steel studs and steel bolts.

I might tend to shy away from Home Depot. The last washers and stuff I like that I needed their stock semed to have taken a definite step toward cheap. Washers were much thinner.

I would suggest a good hardware store.

I have taken my turbo off and on several times and torqued it and had no problems with it being loose.

The stock mounting nuts as well as the ext housing bolts are both stainless..... FYI!

I agree on Home Depot hardware but when your turbo is hanging by 2 bolts its better than nothing and anymore good hardware stores are hard to find

Lots of good recommensdations above. Personally I would never use and thread locker on a manifold type bolt, I always use an anti sieze compound, I would rather it fall out than have to drill it out. Holding the turbo on is not a tremendous feat for the bolts (like holding the front spindle on) just try to match the quality of the original bolts. I would also try to find or fabricate a locking typ tab if there is room for one, something like the tabs for the manifold bolts that bend over the bolt head when tight. bg

The stock mounting nuts on the exhaust manifold for the turbo mounting flange?

Ext housing bolts on?

Thanks,

The big Cat engines use the same nuts and bolts if you have a Cat dealer close to you. The nuts from Cat are locking nuts but not the kind with neoprene the kind that are just crimped a little at the top. Thats what I used on mine and I havent had a problem with them.

No kidding. I don't know where there even is a good old fashioned hardware store in Salt Lake City anymore.

I would use the aircraft type lock nuts (crimped at the top) loctite would be a wast of your money as heat is what you use to make it release .

Chris check with ace bolt and screw just south of nakoma on the access you go right at the stop sign and its back in that industrial area, they should have any kind of bolt you could dream of. I'm pretty sure that was the name of it.
