2 cycle oils

I just noticed that the Stihl chainsaw that I've had for 7 years says to use only TC (air cooled) rated oils, and not to use TCW (marine, water cooled) oils. I've always used whatever I had around, most TCW oils. Anyone know the difference in the oils and what problems that could be caused by using TCW oil in the Stihl? Is it OK to use TC oil in a water cooled outboard?

Outboard motors run much cooler then air cooled engines and the oil is designed different. I think I understand outboard oil will leave deposits in air cooled engines as the additives burn up in the extream heat.



You will find 2 stroke oil threads all over the internet that are worse then the oil threads around here!

Without going into great detail here is what happens if you use the TCW(marine) and TC(air cooled) 2 stroke oil in the wrong applications.



If you use TCW (marine) oil in your Stihl or any other air cooled 2 stroke engine it won't provide enough lubrication. Shortened engine life.



If you use TC (air cooled) oil in your water cooled (outboard) 2 stroke engine it will carbon up and this causes problems like stuck rings and worst. Shortened engine life.

Thanks guys. Guess I learn something new every couple of years. This may explain why the spark arrester screen on the Stihl got carboned up, to the point that it wouldn't run, a few years back.



I've always been very picky about engine oil (Use Delvac 1 in the Ram), but assumed that 2 stroke oils were basically the same. Dumb! I need to start reading the containers!

As far as all of you r air cooled 2- stroke motors, use only the best

"YAMALUBE" BY YAMAHA!!!



This oil is senthic and will not separate from the gas while sitting in the fuel tank under cold conditions.....



Think about it you start a motor that is ice cold and what happens SMOKE alot of it for a second or two, what is happening is you are burring more oil ration then required until gas is pumped to the carb... . this happens usually because the cold climate caused the oil to separate from the fuel... .

But everyone says use synthetic motor oil becuase they don't burn - Oh never mind ;-)
