Was wondering if you guys could give me your thoughts on whether or not driving approximately 10 miles on 2 of the 6 cylinders would screw too much up?

The hottest egt's I saw were almost 1100 on the first hill I came to after I lost the power/cylilnders. After I realized the egts I got out of it even more and the hovered around 800 untill I got into town where I could stop and have cell phone sevice if I needed it. The chip wasn't even on when it happened this time.

This time it spit codes 2149, 0514, 0113. The 0113 and 2149 are new to me.

Last time it did this it spit the 2149 and 2146.

Stupid chip did this to me out in the middle of Kansas with a 28' gooseneck last time but it didn't lose as much power that time. Unfortunately and fortunately I was pretty sure what it was and disconnected the chip completely/ back to factory, and started it then unplugged all the injector harnesses and re-plugged them back in and was good to go.

I wish these things would happen in town and during the day as opposed to at 2 am and in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks in advance.

At first I thought, cool, he's into building a Cummins bike, or some such project.

BTW, with all the carnage seen on this forum, I bet one could obtain enough free parts to build a 2 cylinder Cummins, sawed off block and head, for free. Maybe someone with more time/passion would undertake such a project.

Either it has, or has not screwed up anything.

The other cylinders still pull in cold air, so the EGT would show very low, which could melt a piston while still showing very low temp.

The other thing is, that the crankshaft gets terrible vibrations when only running on 2 cylinders, as does the transmission. Check your harmonic damper.

True, good point. My main worry was the burning up of pistons, but it still runs so hopefully no harm done there. I wasn't sure if there was any lubrication other than the fuel so I wasn't sure if the cylinders would take a bad beating without fuel for that long. I didn't think about the dampner. Am I looking for visible damage? I'd like a fluidampner, but don't want to NEED one yet.

I wish I had the system that our Cessna had where it monitored each cylinder temp individually and displayed it for times like this.

PS, I read somewhere about a guy that was designing his own diesel motor and used separate heads for the cylinders, so a 2 cylinder would be possible with his design. Just thought I'd mention it since my thread title does lead one in that direction of thought.

Thanks.

Still need help

More help needed:

Now when I jump on it to pull out in front of someone, it cuts out like it is a poorly set up carburetor. Could it be something with the fuel injection, CP3 or pump in tank? The chip is unhooked so I know it isn't that. Some sort of timing issue? The harmonic balancer is physically still there and looks fine to my eye.

Where else should I start looking?

Running them rich is what melts the pistons. Lean is not really a big problem. As was already mentioned, the crank is what takes the beating. You can imagine the twisting forces it takes by not having even power pulses. But as tough as this engine is, I seriously doubt any real harm was done.

Great to know, I feel a little better about it now. Now I just have to figure out what is causing the lag when I jump on it. Is there any way that the CP3 pump took some abuse from it? I can't imagine that the injector bank tuning off and it running rough would cause the fuel pump to get messed up. But then again the ins and outs of a diesel are still new to me, I'm used to tearing into gassers, and not having to tear into diesels.

So what or where would I have to check to see if I'm having an issue with the apps. The lag only started after I threw the codes and lost the injector bank.

The old edge juice with attitude, the 5 level 125hp one. I love the chip, but I'm wondering if the chip problem is basically telling me there is some other underlying problem. That is me being optimistic if you couldn't tell. I don't really believe it myself but it makes me feel better.
